So...was doing a turn in the road and the clutch went completley solid (pedal would not move at all. I was in gear and heading for a wall so pushed the pedal hard, and then it went...along with leaving a load of clutch fluid on the floor. No probs I thought, probably just the clutch slave seal as it was replaced in Morocco with a non-standard part anyway.

Got told back by the rangie, took slave out, repaced the seal etc. Went to refit...and as I was abouut to put it in, noticed i could see light through where the slave woud go in. Hmm, odd I though, so had a look round the back to find this...

Oh dear, thats not right at all! Any idea why this might have happened?

I wanted to rebbuild the gearbox anyway at some point because it skips out of 2nd frequently, a well as first now and then if I try to be *ahem* sporty but didnt quite expect this to happen! Will find a new box I guess and rebuild that instead unless can find one at a reasonable price that has been rebuilt.

Sounds good to me...will you post though? I guess they weigh a fair bit? The biggest problem with getting a gearbox is that i cant find any locally and not suprisingly people do not want to ship!

The casing isnt that heavy
Maybe 10kg
I will find me scales later and work it out if you want

Weight about 21kg
Will be between £30 and £45 depending on how fast you want it and the insurance
Or try that shiply web site should get a good deal on there
Collection is from kt12 area

Quite heavy then! Dont suppose you have a rough idea of the dimensions so I can get an accurate price (I would measure mine but its over in Norfolk now)

Still not sure how this happened. I guess the only way is to strip it.

The bell housing is 400mm x 400mm
The back of the box is 200mm x300mm
Total lengh is 500mm
So year fairly big and heavy
Guess you don't realise till you weight it I always thought it was light lol

well according to parcel2go.com they can do that on a 2 day service for £6.99+VAT! Cheap as chips, seems a bit too cheap, I hope it is not their system messing up! So if you are willing to pack it up and gve me final dimensions that would be great!

I take it the casings are universal - mine is a Series 2a...my internals will work wont they?

Right just to set it straight
It came out of a 69 s2a ambulance
Bell housing is s2 with clutch slave on offside and is vertical
Gearbox was an all syncro 4speed unit
As far as I know the casing is the same for s2 with 3rd/4th syncro as this one but it may be best to do some checking
I'm more than happy to wrap it up if you deff want it
Drop me a msg to sort out the final details

This happened to my 2a a few years ago, sounds like the same problem I had, the rod that connects the slave cylinder to the release bearing arm wears through the arm so the rod then hits the gearbox casing, hence the hard pedal,I did the same as you and gave it a good hard press which pushed the rod through the casing and allowed the piston to pop out in a pool of fluid! If you look through the hole where the slave cylinder goes you will see the arm has a big hole in it.if this is the case the gearbox has to come out to replace it.As for the hole in the back I left mine cos it has no efect on the operation of the clutch, unless you do lots of wading then it'll let water in

Thanks for the info. Ah, right, that wont fit mine then! I am guessing with the slave that way it was taken from a 6 Cylinder?

Thank you, will have a good look at that. Glad I am not the only one this has happened to!

No mine is a 19j 4 pot diesel
All s2 have a vertical slave they changed to horizontal slave on the s3

Some of the late s2a had all syncro
Mine did
But if so then the main box is the same as the s3 just with the s2 bellhousing
