well - here's a novel approach to faults, quite opposite to the usual problems !

had a few electrical issues this week - battery died (just packed up due to old age, supposedly nothing sinister) - but when back up and running courtesy of RAC jump start, there were a few odd things going on:

gear selection display flashing on dashboard

no intermittent wipers (though fine on full)

no indicators (all lights otherwise fine)

central locking knackered (could only open driver's door; others wdnt operate via keyfob or the dashboard switch)

so, drive to local reliable garage, new battery plugged in, ECU reset and all is well, until i get home tonight, turn the key to switch the thing off, take the key out of the ignition - and the engine is still running !

not going mental like the turbo is knackered, just idling along at about 850 rpm quite happily

so, stuck the key back in, turn it as if i was turning on, then back off again, and this time it goes off as normal - what the hell is all that about ?

more to the point, if it happens again, and refuses to turn off with the key, what's the best way to kill it - auto box, so kinda hard to stall the thing ?

thanks in advance for any thoughts !

Only just got a disco so don't know much. But I'm guessing the only way to turn it off should it happen again would be to disconnect the battery. Not really sure on the other issues. Good luck!

Sounds like fuel cut off solenoid. Lots on ebay for about a tenner.

might make sense - the relay on my auxiliary driving lights is fried as well - looks like the electrics had a complete fit it some point and i'll be finding other bits and pieces for a while - bit strange that the diagnostics didn't flag a single error with the new battery in situ and the ECU reset though

thanks for the input - appreciated !

Theres a lot of them around at the moment. Water in the dashboard fuse box again. take the back off the fuse box and have a look. There must be 3 or 4 threads about this on Disco 2's in the last couple of weeks.

If you do need to 'stall' it

Pull the bonnet, and block the air feed to the air filter box some way, a rag or similar, or even do the same at the air flow meter, which is easier to get at

Starving an engine of air will stop it ok

cheers

I agree. Mine had similar (but not identical) weird electrical problems and it was water in the fuse box.

A new one's around £250 (if you can find one) but a used one for £20 has sorted me out.

@ HH you don't say which model/year of Disco you have, so it's a bit difficult to offer advice.

ahhh - well spotted !

2001 DII TD5 ES

general dampness seems to be the likely reason - but, fingers crossed, no more symptoms today, and no repetition of the running on....

Have a look under the dash on the drivers side.Around the passenger compartment fuse box.Water ingress here will cause allsorts of problems,I've got one in at the moment which is like a swimming pool inside.... main problem is that it continually tries to start itself, the central locking wont work etc, etc.
