Hi, advice needed if ppossible.
I went to cowm at the weekend and pretty much sank my disco. everything was fine until the batt light came on. it appears my alternator has died and so has my rev counter. at a guess I expect the rev counter is fed from the alternator so I assume it will start working with when the alternator is fixed.
Does anyone what may be the issue with the alternator and any fixes. I have sprayed it with wd40 but it is still not charging the system.

also is there any way to prevent the alternator from going screwy everytime I take it off road. (apart from keeping out of the water).

anyway Cowm is brilliant so it was well worth the hassle.

Thanks,
Steve

If your lucky you could start your engine and poor fresh water on the alt. Has worked for me in the past

Sounds like you got mud/grit/silt/sand into the alternator somehow, which has probably destroyed a bearing, so the rotating parts have gone into the windings and trashed them. Best bet is a new alternator.

Might just be a wire fallen off though?

Can't really say without seeing and hearing it, or doing a proper spin test of the alternator to see its faults, but I've ruined 2 alternators due to off roading, for the above reasons.

just bought a new alternator. £120. expensive day out it appears.

new air filter
new MAS
new lift pump
new alternator
diesel
entrance fee etc etc etc.:mad::mad::mad:

My fault for kicking the arse out of it. i will post the viseo at some point, you can see how I killed it.
