Now here's a Warning symbol I've NEVER seen before

Just been out to my '51 TD5 ES and the remote fob wouldn't open it - both fobs.

Opened manually and turned iginition key.
Secondary systems fine (radio, heater, washers)
primary systems dead. (Starter,Direction indicators)......

and here's the bit I've never seen before:
In the lower part of the Speedometer, underneath the mileage and left of the trip mileage a big flashing B with a 45 degree line through it (as with a no-entry sign)

Thought it was the fob battery, but unlikely in both fobs.
Checked fuses, all ok. Fault seems to have rectified itself as the car suddenly responded to the fobs, the little red light on the dash blinked furiously, and the starter etc came live.

Not an unhappy ending, but I sure as hell don't know what happened. Sort of niggles at your 'reliability', not knowing.

Anyone had this / knows about this ?

regards

Ian

I have seen this before but it was a long time ago, from memory its a confliction of data between the instrument pack and the BCU or something like that, sometimes the mileage will flash aswell if there is a difference between the two (BCU stores mileage as well as the speedo).

If it happens again, disconnect the battery for a few mins.

I'll have to go through my notes as I can't remember off hand the exact cause.

Guys I have same symbol appearing. Appears only when I turn on the lights, no brake lights or indicators either. Also have no power to central locking, fog light or fuel filler flap. Key fob is not operating central locking either... ideas??? Tried disconnecting the battery, no change. Car is starting and running normally. Help!

You'll be lucky to get a reply from either of the previous messages, they were posted just over ten years ago. It might qualify for the "Thread resurrection of the month award".

The "crossed B" is usually associated with a problem in the communication between the BCU and the IDM. The first checks to make are that there's no evidence of moisture damage in both units, particularly the IDM.

The BCU or Body Control Unit is located up behind the passenger's glove box and the Intelligent Driver Module or IDM is part of the main fuse board behind the panel beneath the steering wheel.

LOL, something like that. Any ideas about this "B with a dash through it" symbol on the odometer? No central locking, no rear wiper (do have washer), very low power to lights, no indicators, fog lights, fuel filler cap. stumped.

So what do I win.. lol? Thanks Brian, I have looked at the main fuse box and all seems fine, i'll have a look behind glove box. Could it battery on the way out?

What do you win? Another chance to have the p1ss taken out of you!

The IDM is on a printed circuit board on the back of the fuse board, so you might not see any damage from the front.

Many of the circuits you've mentioned do have parts in both the BCU and the IDM, such as the indicators where the stalk switch starts a process in the BCU which in turn operates the relevant relays on the IDM.

The battery could be a contributary factor, the Td5 Disco can throw up some strange symptoms when the battery is on its way out.

If you decide to replace one or other of the suspect units, the IDM tends to be cheaper and is easier to change.

Do you have access to a compatible diagnostic code reader such as a Nanocom, Hawkeye or Lynx?

So latest update. Checked all fuses in both boxes, all fine. Still had the issue with the crossed B, but only when I switched on the lights, which thought was strange and nothing on this on threads I've read. Then in desperation I decided i'd try the fob from my spare key, on which the actually metal key part is broken. Hey presto all is good with the world - no more issues. No idea what was wrong with the other fob, but everything working now as it should be, swopped the fob into the good key shell. Fingers crossed it's sorted for good Thanks all for your advice. G

I really hope i'm wrong but i doubt it's fixed for good cos i dont believe that the crossed B can be caused by a fob issue what so ever... let's hope when it comes back it will not affect the immobiliser cos it can have various intermittent behaviours

So looks like you were right, took it for a spin, and crossed B reappeared... Can now open filler flap. Still only appears when lights are switched on. Nightmare, MOT due in July, just had power steering pipes replaced, new clutch and flywheel as well as reconditioned transfer box. Not that it's not bleeding fluid its getting its wires crossed, gotta love it...

One with the same part number would be the best but if you can't find at least it must be the same ''cathegory" : pre-facelift , early facelift or late facelift... i'm not familiar with that UK style '51 thing to figure out which one you have
