I have been off roading on a fairly large track in and arount the Moel Tryfan slate quarry near the small village of Fron (off the A487 after Caernarfon). The track appears to have been created by enthusiasts, and covers both common land, and private land. Does anyone know if using this track is legal? It is an amazing place for punishing a Land Rover, and I've enjoyed several afternoons of mud throwing there, but I am always nervous whenever I see the police helicopter pass overhead.

Probably. The best way to find it is head for Caernarfon on the A4087 (junction 10 A55). Go straight through Caernarfon, then through Bontnewydd. You will come across a junction on the left for FRON and CARMEL I think. Head for FRON (3 miles) which is a small hamlet. Turn Left once you reach the end of the road, and head for the slate quarry. You will see the common land is decorated with Land Rover tyre tracks. It has very challenging bits on it, including drop offs, ramps, mud, slate, beautiful scenery, burnt out XR2s...

Would be very keen to hear of any "legal" places to drive in North Wales. Heard a rumour of a place near Bethel anybody know more?

There is a site near bethel which i know about but its just a field rented out for the day to the local Landy club for trails, ie RTV's and the like
I've heard the old Landcraft site is rented out at weekends and there is another near Bala or could be the same one
theres a farmer who lets clubs and the like play & Camp on his land near Ruthin for a fee

If your planning to do a lot of offroading then I recommend joining this club. North Wales Land Rover Club lots of people head for Bleanau Ffestiniog and Dolweddelyn there's a few old miners tracks and abandoned rail lines you can drive on.

Yeah looks like a bit of fun but I don't really do clubs. Like to get offroad when the mood takes me but not really into competing or organised stuff.

Hughesy, have you ever been round Cymyran near RAF Valley. Went this afternoon first time ever doing any off roading. Used to go around there on a bike in my teens. There was sand dunes, rocks grassy lanes. I was a bit scared to go at first as I was on my own but my Disco took everything in its stride. Great fun, I'm going again soon!

I'm gonna be on Anglesey for 3 weeks in April if anyone wants to meet up for a bit of gentle off roading Disco's bog standard and my daily driver so don't want to kill it.

Try this, it's naughty, illegal, and you shouldn't do it but a nice drive if there's no one about. have a play at Cymyran, then go over the dunes onto the beach, drive along the beach to Rhosneigr following the river up to the left into the dunes again. Cross the river and follow it up until you come out by the golf club. Watch out for soft dry sand in a couple of places but it's well do able in a disco Make sure there's nobody about and you shouldn't get any hassle.

Hmmm !
Not going to get into slaging off specific clubs here but here is some general advice
have a good look to what they actual do, look at the website and see if they do what they say they do
Too many £20+ clubs about, join us get a **** sticker, a couple of **** newsletters per year full of adverts, one greenlane day out half way across the country which needs booking 6 months in advance and costs the earth. An AGM called at the last minute on a wet thursday in Feb, only to find the whole club run by one family for the past 20 years who have all held the same positions.
nwlrc is a trailing club part of the arc, its great for trails if you want to get into that, but don't expect any laning
