Now search throws up the answer I knew - you can't get the heater fan out without taking the dash out but I've taken the centre dash out and this reveals the top of the casing - as per spider replacement

Now you can see the fan unit in the pic - the big cylindrical object at the bottom but clearly I won't be able to access it further without more dismantling which I'm not doing.
But it occurred to me that a small hole to accept a wd40 straw could be drilled in the right place to get to the motor unit. Question is where is the right place?
Has anyone had one apart or hazard a guess where the right spot might be?
A hole that small could be sealed afterwards.

Also I've noticed the disco 2 boys can get the fan out quite easily - are 1 and 2 not the same dash?
Mine is a soft dash rrc hence asking here.
Cheers
David

The 300 series D1 heater fan is a large cylindrical item that's fitted vertically, it can be accessed and removed from behind and below the glove box as it's the same unit that's fitted to the D2. That one of the 700 parts that LR didn't replace when building the D2

If... the soft dash RRc has the horizontal cylinder style of fan as fitted to the 200 series D1 and earlier RR then it would be a problem to remove to get access to the bronze bearing at each end, at the end at the passenger side you can see the open bearing so easy to give a splash a lubricant, on it the other end which is a capped bearing is very difficult to get access.
It appears it's a common issue with that bearing, all I did was point the straw of the spray lube in that area and spray, although as the bearing is worn the squeak returned six months later I believe I spent a few years doing that. :(

Thanks - the dash is the same on rrs/d and d1 and 2 but the heater fan appears not. I have no fan behind the glovebox sadly. I'll see what I can find on the passenger end. Certainly the noise is coming from that end so maybe I'll be lucky.
Thanks

This is what the early D1 and RR heater looks like, the fan motor has two bearings the out side one is capped but the cap may unscrew the other is between the motors body and the fan which is difficult IIRC it a long while ago that since I looked at heaters :)

Now here's an odd thing. I took the glove box down and the cardboard lower cover off to see the passenger side of the fan housing to be met with the sight of what looked like a fan. Sure enough its the same set up as a disco 2 and the fan should drop out with 4 screws. No time to day but how have I got a set up from a 98+ car on my 94 range rover? Clearly I didn't look hard enough initially or rather didn't expect to find it!
Anyway my life has become that little bit easier as I can whip this out and do a proper overhaul job.
