Hi All
Hope you can help, since July 2010 my 1997 300tdi Discovery has been steadily getting louder with a "tappet" sound" this has also gone worse recently by a wheezing sound which seems to be coming from the air filter. I have took it to the local garage who say it may be a valve or valves. The estimate for the job far exceeds the value of the vehicle.
Any one any ideas for this problem
It starts ok

It runs ok but seems under powered and sluggish under 40mph after this it
runs ok,

No excessive smoking

This all started after the mot in July, when the emissions test required the engine to be revved within an inch of its life!!!

Many Thanks in anticipation
:blabla:

Thanks for these suggestions, I am getting the compressions checked and the rocker cover is coming off tomorrow for further investigation, I ill advise you hopefully tommorrow of how it has gone.
Cheers H

You need to check the valve caps that sit between the top of the valve stem and the rocker arm. If these wear enough they will disintergrate. Mine were worn and even after setting the clearances it sounded rough still, replaced them and it is sweet now. For the sake of £1.80 each you may as well just replace them. Also, if you've a ropey EGR valve that could cause the weezing noise. Mine did the same till I scrapped the EGR altogether.

I'd go and check round th eback of the cylinder head a bit pronto .. I was told I had leaking injector washers which gave a chuffing tappett type sound ..turned out the head gasket had gone... stick a rubber glove on and owrk your hand arond the rear of the head.. if it's gone you'll feel it... I hope it's not that but you should check.. thanks

Hi all
Many thanks for the suggestions, and yes indeed it is the number 4 cylinder valve cap that has gone AWOL! Does anyone know where I can these mail order, I might as well replace all whilst the rocker cover is off. Mechanic has adjusted the tappet tonight and now much better but needs cap needs replacing.
Thanks again for your help
H
