Hi this is my first time posting, i have a 2002 freelander td4, at the minute it tick over nicely a little smoke at the start but nothing serious, at low revs sounds ok, but after 1500 revs starts to sound like a injector misfiring machine gun going off, and a load of black smoke blowing out the exhaust, i took all 4 injectors to a diesel specialist who tested them and cleaned them, he said there were problems with the injectors at all, he said the egr could be sticking or a split in the intercooler pipe might cause the problem. I put the injectors back in and gave the egr another clean as i did this the other week but you never know it might help, put everything together and it was still the same. A few weeks ago i put some new glow plugs in as the glow plug light was not lighting up on the dash, (which it still does not) one of the plugs seems to be sticking out about a millimeter more than the others even though it seems as far as it will go would this cause the problem, any help would be more than welcome

If the injectors were checked by a reputable agent then some of the other things which seem to help td4 smoke/misfire/power issues are disconnecting the egr valve. I have blanked mine off. You can buy a bypass fitting cheaply to do this. This is a common problem. The other possibility, equally common, is a dirty maf sensor. Oil gets blown by the turbo and builds up on the sensor. First step is disconnect it. The computer will compensate for the disconnection and give an above average fuel supply signal. If your problem dissappear s whilst the maf is disconnected then there's your problem! First try cleaning it and all the ducts and turbo hoses. I uses switch cleaner solvent in an aerosol to blast my maf sensor clean.

Really greatfull for your reply, is this sensor easy to get to or is it at the rear of the engine thanks. Also i will check hoses as well cheers

i have cleaned the maf sensor and took out the glow plugs and put them back in again and they have gone in further down this time, it seems to have made a bit of difference but is still making the noise but mot quite as much, whilst the sensor was out i tried running the car and it did not seem to make much difference to the way the car was running, i did not drive the car as the engine management light came on so i reved it for a few minutes would it have been better to run it to see any difference. did not get time to check the hoses as yet will try to check them at the weekend
