Alright guys. Never had an issue with the car before it came home coughing its guts up(another tale of woe, egr return pipe clamp, half missing) and noticed when I lifted the bonnet that the battery is in free fall, wedged in by an exhayst hanger of all things. Looking for a break-down of the parts that should be there and a pic of someone's fitted please.

Thanks

P.S. If anyone knows where I can get the split clamp that would also be a help

Paul

The battery clamp bolt is well known for seizing into the captive nut in the plastic battery tray, and the nut spinning, so the bolt needs cutting off.
Scrapyard your cheapest fix.

A landrover dealership should be able to print out a parts diagram.
Its just a plastic wedge with a bolt through it that is held captive on the underside of the battery tray.
You could easily make one yourself.

Just had the same saga.

Battery clamp bolt seized and the insert spinning. Had the nice man from the AA on hand anyway, so between us we chiselled the battery out using a 3 inch cold chisel. Just place the chisel between clamp and battery, two or three sharp thwacks and it breaks the edge off the base of the battery allowing removal and access to the tray. Once the tray is out, saw off the clamp bolt head with a hacksaw and knock the bolt stub out.
After it's all back together again, I used a large self tapping screw and a 1/4 " rawlplug to hold the clamp in place-job done!

Of course, if you intend to re-use the battery this procedure will cause you a problem but if you are replacing old with new then it works a treat.

"to replace what was the captive bolt I used a roofing J bolt and wingnut"

My kind of lateral thinking. Well done Alan.

Bolt just did this to me, captive part cracked off and now I cannot get the battery off. Started one job - waterproof box on my synergy so moving battery out of way. Now I've got a whole new job of trying to drill out the bolt and bodge up a bracket. These landy's keep you busy!
If I drill off the bolt head will the rest of the bolt and the captive nut punch out and fall below? I don't want to knacker the battery. I can feel the bolt spinning when I reach under the tray, but I cannot feel the captive nut.

Bugger it!!!!!!!!

Same thing. Got a new battery but the bolt is just spinning.

Failing at stage 1:mad:

So?:-

1) Grind or drill head off bolt?

2) Chisel off battery bottom retaining lip?

3) Break up the clamp and buy a new one?

What do you retain the bolt with underneath if I do any of these?

Thanks

David

If you can get a strap round it PM me. I've got fabric straps that are used to retain batteries in disabled scooters and electric wheelchairs. You're welcome to some just for the postage.

Dogsbody,
Thanks a lot for the offer. Appreciated.
I would like to keep it as is if at all possible.

I don't mind butchering the clamp as I can get another one, or breaking the battery bottom off, it's just what to do after?

Again, thanks.

Right.

Chiselled the lip off the bottom of the old battery. Disconnected battery and removed the carrier.

Hold-down bolt was solid in the ferrule and spinning in the plastic.

Ground bolt head off.

Refitted and used a large Rawlplug banged into the hole and a screw to secure the clamp. Will fit a threaded J bolt tomorrow as I think that will be more secure.

I used a battery booster to keep power to the electrics. Not sure what reprogramming would be required if the power was cut off, but just to be sure.

If I can get the ferrule off the bolt I may refit with some Coppaslip applied.
