Hi all, I've just brought a series 2a with a diesel engine 15J, I cannot find any information regarding changing over from diesel to petrol.
Can anyone tell me if there is a petrol cylinder head and accessories that I can fit to use petrol.
Sorry but this diesel I have is smelly and very noisy, and I have always had petrol vehicles.
If anyone has a petrol engine for sale please let me know.
I hope this is all good I know nothing about forums this is my first time?

Welcome along.

The diesel does indeed take a little getting used to - slow and smelly it is....but that's its character and you do get used to it!
I learnt today that In the 70s to 80s the diesel variants cost around £1,000 more than their petrol counterparts.

Sorry, I can't help you with the conversion tech info.

Not seen any guides. But apart from checking the wiring differences (to get lt for the ignition), cleaning out or replacing the fuel system and the exhaust, it should be pretty straight forward assuming your replacement engine is good.
If it's really a 15j, the front offside engine is different to the petrol engines.

15J is a 2.5 l injection pump is off front timing [belt driven] case vacuum pump where petrol distributor would go.
Look out for a 2.5 petrol engine

The OP mentions fitting a petrol cylinder head to convert his engine. It is a lot more complicated than that, virtually all of the engine internals would need replacing as well as the head. Forget that idea unless you are a bit mad and fairly rich. Get yourself a good petrol engine or a later TDI. eBay used to a good place to find engines but they seem to be drying up.

Recent press stories about restrictions on old diesels might point you to getting an original petrol 2.25 and refurbishing. I converted to petrol about 8 years ago. You need to reconnect the accelerometer and install a choke not complicated.

You might be able to smooth it out and improve performance by setting the tappets, getting an injector service, and checking the pump timing.

Conversion would be expensive and time consuming. If you are dead set on getting a petrol engine, try and get a 2.5. much better than 2.25, and a bit more power.

Thanks, Turboman. I will look for a 2.5 petrol, I'm familiar with petrol engines even though they are thirsty, its just there don't seem any around at the moment?

All these are quite old engines now, so it may take a while to find one. Non standard engines were often fitted in series, Ford 4 and V6, among others. But they arent as common as they used to be, and the conversion plates etc. likewise.

Unless you are planning to do a lot of miles, I wouldnt worry too much about fuel mileage either, most old landies only do a few k each year.
