Hi :)

This is my first post on here for a long time :-( , so please be gentle :)

As the title, I’m a proud owner of a diesel series 3, that I’ve been driving every day now for a few weeks, I have serviced the old girl myself, but here’s the question?

How do I check the oil level in the over drive unit (Fairy) I think, I’ve googled to try and find some photos but no joy.

Any help much appreciated :)

Cheers

Tim

I just did mine on Sunday. Mine's a Bearmach unit not a Fairey, but this may help:
  • wouldn't bother trying to check the level, just assume it should be changed completely;
  • take off the middle seat/ cubby box cover to give access to where the overdrive unit is just above and to the side of the handbrake drum;
  • there will be a filler hole on the side of the unit somewhere, probably with a 20mm or so filler nut;
  • There must be a similar sized drain hole at the bottom;
  • capacity around 1.5L of EP90, just squeeze it in the filler hole.
If it's been of the road for a while bets are that it's low on oil and is in dire need of changing rather than just top up. A full change will improve gear change and running noise. Took me around 20 minutes to do the job.;)

Welcome to lz, Tim! :)

Like he said, might as well change as check, they don't hold a vast amount of oil at the best of times.

Early Fairey ODs had a dipstick on a plug on the top. It may have been discontinued on the later ones.

The bearmach unit doesn't have a dipstick. I hadn't changed it for a while. It was like treacle. Running nice today.

Thanks for the replies Guys :), its a job for the weekend now, Thought I had some EP90 left over from when I flushed the diffs, but no joy. Just an Empty container :mad:
