newbie looking for help please

hi thanks for looking, hope you can help ,(allthough i think im going to be a regular on this site) i have a nice 53 plate td4 freelander se 63,000 miles full service history 70% main dealer it runs well from the off and starts first time ,but seems to search for fuel/or air , on cold idle ,once warm the problem gets better and it idles better but still searches a little ,i have been adding fuel additive and this hasnt really helped ,however it also used to admit a horrible smell on start up kind of acidic similar to a burnt clutch plate but not the same ,and this has now dissapeared please help

if the engine is hunting I'd look for an air leak on the inlet side.

Try disconnecting the maf sensor so it runs on default settings, loads of info on this if you search.

check intercooler hoses for splits etc, esp. where long hose runs across top of engine as it chafes on mounting bolts.

check / replace crankcase breather filter
