Hi guys, hopefully starting a land rover project soon. Have seen a series 3 HCPU locally with some work needed, rear crossmember will need doing- is this a special part for the HCPU or a standard 109 item? No doubt there's various guides around on how to replace it so I'll not ask that one yet.

Other question is that the 2.25 engine (5 main bearing I'm lead to believe) is giving a lot of blue smoke, what's the likely cause? Has been stood a few years and it almost sounds like it's running on 3 at times. Exhaust is rusted through too.

A few other bits need tidying up and welding but the above really will tell me whether or not to go for it.

Cheers

Sam

common fault if its deisel and its been standing the valve seals go hard which is allowing oil into the valves and then burning in the bores and the only cure is to remove the head and replace the seals not a hard job to do it can be done with out removing the head but if you do it do it properly that way you have piece of mind.

Thanks for that, at the moment I'm erring on the side of sticking a newer lump in anyway. 200TDIs seem to be everywhere, this build is going to be purely for off road and shifting and carrying stuff (got an escort for a daily drive) so wondering whether it's worth doing, or sticking an older one such as a 2.5TD in.

:welcome2:
:doh:browse.
Thanks for the input. Can find little to no info on the HCPU versions so thought I'd ask...

I would say dont, but Im an originalist. The 2.25 is sluggish but its a great engine, I would never have anything else in my series

Is that really all for a rebuild kit? Might be able to talk my mate round too, he has an early 110 2.25 and is wanting to scrap that for a 200TDi

The HCPU bought anyway now, where would I go about buying this rebuild kit from? May as well do it all so then I know it's done :)

Whats a HCPU?, I'm not a landy anorak, I'm guessing its a pickup.

I suggest a compression test, this will tell you whether the blue smoke is a knacked engine or just the valve seals, not that it matters if your gonna change the lump.

God this was a looooong time ago :D Bought another Landy since then! Still got the hi cap though, and it's still nowhere near roadworthy lol, but big plans are afoot!

Moving it, with help from Bump

How it stands now, excuse the mental looking pikey in the pic

Whatever happens to it, it'll be something special and a bit extreme by my standards - purely because I've bought the 88" now and I can't see any point in putting it back together standard and just selling it on (as the 88 is more practical)....I haven;t got the heart to break it for parts, and I stand to lose alot if I sell it as is...
