Well been and gone and done it . got myself a nice little 1980 county in pretty good order. Thought i would take it to an expert, who relieved me of £2500 for some welding , new swivel joints, spring hanger repair ,brakes, and various bushes. Also a new core plug in the back of the engine 200tdi.
So it goes like a train stops on a sixpence. I now have electrical gremlins, one dim headlight no indicators, no hazard flashers , and no electric engine fan. So sorting thro, fan works relay is u/s and wiring useless, so new wiring and switch and sensor reqd. Front spotlights fitted and no wiring, Rear loading reverse light fitted and wired but no switch or way to get it to work. What fun this is so far.
Spent 2 days chasing thro wires most are crap earths, I haven't found them all yet. Haynes manual makes great sense but bears no relation to my wiring colours, they have been colour coded by a colour blind chimp on ecstasy as they change half way along . I now have a 1/2 bucket full of odd wires that went nowhere, Do you think I should buy a new loom , or throw money at an expert ? Thanks for reading my rant

Hi and welcome!

Dodgy wiring and “upgrades” by previous owners is an absolute nightmare! You might be better going for a new loom but it’s not cheap.

OK. all sorted took me all week but have found 5 culprit earth wires, so now everything works. Unable to trace the spotlight on the rear as no switch LOL, and no spare wires at the front end. But lets be positive got the kenlowe fan working , relay was rotten from rust and wires went nowhere. Indicators found a burnt relay so just replaced .

Hi there and welcome.
Looms can be a lot of work to replace. If you've replace the junk with appropriate thickness and connections are sound (soldered?) Then you're probably good to go

Welcome to LZ. :)

Personally, I would ditch the electric fan, and fit standard, then you could ditch the wires for the fan as well.
If you want to save money on the loom, fit a battery isolator, then you can switch off if you get an electrical fire, which will keep you going for a while.

Might just mention, this section is for Introductions, so further tech issues in the Series section, please.
