Hi,I’m not sure on the posting etiquette of the forum,I have a Freelander that’s smoking really bad all the time,am I alright posting a video of the problem to see if anybody can shed some light, thanks for taking the time to read this

Post the vid on YouTube and link it in this thread. It would be helpful to know what model Freelander you're talking about though and what colour the smoke is. ;)

Thanks for the response,I’ve uploaded a video to YouTube and the link is ,it’s a freelander TD4 on a 02 plate,it smokes like that all the time, even worse when you rev the engine,it’s fairly noisy as well, thanks for the help

Looks like a turbo oil seal failure to me. Is the oil level going down faster than normal?
Disconnect the elbow boost pipe where it joins the EGR valve and see if the smoke clears.

It could also be a misfuel? Or a failed injector, but injectors don't generally smoke so much.

^^^ Agree turbo or injector - look for the smoking gun: If oil is burning, oil level will be dropping. If it’s fuelling, MPG will be down.

Would an injector drop test work here - disconnect injectors one at a time and see if the smoke clears?

Thanks for helping,Is this the pipe to remove from the EGR valve or the smaller pipe with metal braid

That's the one, the large 90° rubber pipe. Remove the pipe completely and rev the engine to see if the smoke clears. Be careful no to get anything near the plastic pipe as air and oil from the turbo will blast out as high speed.

I undid one end and it didn’t make any difference,so I’ve removed the EGR and started it,oil is coming from the solid metal pipe,I’ve included some pics

So if I was to get another turbo that would “fix” the smoking issue,I was thinking the whole lump was going to need changing

Ahhhhhh brill,I don’t mind getting my hands dirty, would that particular one fit my car and would taking the turbo apart be fairly easy, you have been really helpful, thanks again for you time and advice

would taking the turbo apart be fairly easy
try a video search on youtube ..
i saw one re. the variable vane types ..
but didn't save the link :-/

Is it likely to go out of control if not fixed soon? I stopped to help a guy yesterday when I saw his Hyundai Santa Fe over revving with a load of smoke pouring out. I was too late though as the engine stopped by itself as I jumped out. Probably sucked all the oil out of the sump and seized. :(
