My disco is pretty standard, no winch and generally doesn't carry much load, but I think it is too soft and soggy on the back and the front doesn't ride speed bumps as well as I would expect on the front. All too soft!

After some trawling about I am now considering new Britpart DA4197 on the back and DA4199 on the front.
Foundry 4x4 have some on fleebay for 130gbp.
Any views?

Britpart springs are good, not known many problems with them. Never heard of Foundry before.

Isn't a D2 usually on air bags? They should give a good ride.

Thanks, I was hoping they weren't a complete no-go. Mine doesn't have air bags (don't know if it ever did - 1998)
Its just poundage choice; the DA4197 & 4199 are only a light load increase.
I liked my old 110 and that needed weight to get the rear springs to do anything. How hard should you go with a Disco though?

You should be able to tell if it had air bags, there will be a compartment for the compressor alongside the chassis leg.
My 2000 D2 had airbags as standard.
Air is generally considered to be a better option an a D2.
When you say poundage increase, what are you comparing it to? The springs that are on there at the moment?
I would be wary of heavy duty springs, they can give a very harsh ride, unless you are carrying a lot of weight, as you describe on the 110.

I'll have a look and see what there is underneath but I don't think i'll be going for air ~(prefer to keep thing simple and cheap!)
Yes I don't want to go as hard as the 110 was but I can't seem to find anyone to confirm or otherwise that this choice of spring rate is the right one.
The existing springs look relatively new on the front and the rear somewhat older with flakey paint and rust. No idea what poundage they are but I'm guessing standard.
The front feels like they bottom out on more severe speed bumps and the rear just seems very soft and I can feel it wallowing after a heavy bump.
I may have to change the shocks but they look ok.

Air bags aren't actually expensive, although more than springs, and they aren't very complex either, just the bags and a small compressor.

The reason I was asking if it was originally on air is that if it was, there will be no such thing as standard springs, so you don't know what springs the previous owner has fitted. They could be off almost anything, which may be why they don't give a good ride.

If you can feel wallowing, I would guess you might need new shocks as well.

Good point!
I'll try to determine whether it did have air at some stage then.

Look into it, and also price up how much it would cost to go back to air. Most people seem to prefer it.

If you do decide to go with springs again, I think you will need something fairly strong, D2 are a heavy vehicle. It might be worth trying forum search in this section, to find out what springs other people have used when converting to coils.

I fitted these (see link) after I lent my d2 out & got it back with air suspension probs, it sits very level compared
to where it sat with the bags on, always seamed to sit lower. No issues with the springs at all it was a great buy. :)

I've just measured my Discovery 2 ride height dimensions as 495 front and 480 rear, from hub centre to edge of wheel arch.
I'm assuming this is standard height, because I have read somewhere that others have measured similar, and will rise 50mm with new +2" springs.

Sounds about right.

Despite what Britpart's catalogue info might say, the Britpart DA4197 is a very significant rate increase compared to standard - 290lb/in vs 160 lb/ in standard - is nearly double !
I had them on the back of my D2 for a while before deciding they were stupid unless you were carrying massive loads in the back regularly .Even a quarter of a ton of slabs only dropped the back 1 inch.
I've now got a Defender "medium" spring on the back 240lb/inch, even that hardly counts as soft - but the ride is OK.
