just bought a SWB series 3 1971 - however on the way home engine blew - not a great start - taken home by AA - might need some advice as to what to do next. It is a Perkins engine - rebuild - scrap or replace with more modern engine . Any advice would be welcomed. Gutted at the moment and licking my wounds !!!

Welcome to the forum

Sorry to hear of yer troubles. Which perkins is it and what actually happened to it? Over heated and seized... something escaped out the side of the engine...

Hi Many thanks for the feedback. The engine is a Perkins 500 series. It was struggling to get above 35mph - but I now think that it was set in low gear and not high gear. Which may have caused the problem. There was a pop and a lot of white smoke out of the exhaust and she just died. Now it will not turn over at all - engine seems seized. There was a little bit of oil coming out of the back of the engine to the nearside - seems to have come out of what looks like a breather tube. I have also discovered that the vin plate states that it is a Series IIa not a series 3 as I thought it was. Anyway now have a Landy with a great body, great chassis and great bulkhead but not a working engine. Is conversion to a 200tdi a straight swap or do I have to change the gearbox and rear axle as well. Very new to all of this so might be asking silly questions for which I apologise in advance.

I think many a series comes home on the back of a recovery truck, mine did too. First step is to determine what is wrong with the engine before making rash decisions. Mine conked out on the motorway when I first bought it, I was convinced the gearbox had smashed itself but it turned out to be nothing more than a UJ. You need to prepare yourself for the fact that the engine problem is only the first one you will have. Welcome to Landyzone, happy tinkering.
