Hi all,
I have just had a new key cut and programmed, all appeared fine until I tried it the other day, all ignition lights on etc then turned to start and dead as if battery lead loose. I put old key in and started fine then swapped over and other worked? New one starts sometimes and others not, all functions work just this intermittent starting.
Any suggestions most welcome before I get the locksmith back out!
Cheers

Open you fob,

does it have the little yellow chip like fob 1 or 2.

1 is from a D2
2 is form a Rover 75.

It is your passive immobiliser cutting in. watch the little red LED on the dash , after you open the door it should cut in after 30 seconds. A rover 75 key fob does not have the passive immobiliser chip, try it , unlock with the r75 key, get in and wait until the red led flashes, try the ignition.
( the D2 fob has to be kept at a distance to check this out.)

If it does not start, press unlock on the fob and try again.

Cheers

Hi @Cleckheaton Kid ,

No worries, it is very common, a lot of the fobs sold on the bay of lfea say Discovery 2 when you look inside they are rover 75 / 45 fobs. As long as you know about it then it is not a problem. Did you check inside to see if it had the yellow chip missing as per the photo?

Cheers

Hi, yes it only has the 1 chip, just bizarre how it works then doesn't, the locksmith tried to say it was my immobiliser and when i offered your information he had no idea the keys were different!
Do you know where i can get the 2 chip fob?
Thanks again

It is not bizarre that it does work and then does not. In simple terms.

The D2 fob has the yellow chip, when your cars immobiliser restarts after 30 seconds the chip communicates with the passive immobliser coil around the ignition barrel which makes the fob send a signal to the rf receiver to stop the immobiliser. So the car can start if the fob is in the ignition.
The R75 key does not have the chip ( the R75 uses a black lozenge type chip , that is located in the fob as a separate piece). So even tho the coil sends out the signal the fob does not transmit so the passive immobiliser does not get switched off. If that makes sense.

So with the R75 fob by pressing the unlock key again after the led has started to flash , you basically restart the 30 second window to start the car.

It is working as it should.

Only way is to either buy a D2 keyfob brand new and have it reprogrammed, get one from remotekey whcih would include a programming card, or buy from someone who has picture on bay of flea that show the insides, but it would still need to be reprogrammed using a nanocom.

Cheers

cheers for all that, i see what you mean regarding the 30 second window, ive been keeping original key in car! In reality, if i start as soon as i get in it should go is that right?

Exactly,........:)

Which is probably why it seems intermittent. As sometimes you will get in and start straight away and other you may check your make up.... play with the radio before you try and start it.........

Oh, and make sure you know your EKA code.

Cheers
