New key fob

I need a new key and fob for my 2001 Discovery as it only came with one when I bought the car. The main stealer wants £144 all in including £54 for programming!

I know I could use www.remotekey.co.uk but have also read that Rover keys might be suitable.

Does anyone know if Rover key fobs are compatible and if so which fob to get?

I use a fob from a Rover 75(on my Disco 2) but only for the shell as mine had the buttons cracked;don't know if the electronics are the same but you can ask a dealer.
The price is better , arround 30 quids a new fob on ebay.

That's what I'm hoping but I don't know if the LR stealer would be likely to tell me as they stand to get £144 for a new LR one!
 
i used remote key for mine got it by next day deliver £65 all in , all you need is the frequency either off your existing fob or from the alarm ecu in the passenger footwell , you need a dentist mirror or similar to read it off the ecu as for some reason landrover mounted te ecu facing inwards so you cannot get yourhead in to read it ...

Thanks for the suggestion, I might well do that if I can't find out if a Rover fob works
 
Did you buy the car from a garage or privately? I had the same problem when I bought mine from a garage and I got them to pay for a spare as it didn't have one, My local main dealer only wants 26 quid to program it.

No such luck I'm afraid, the car only came with one key and my local stealer wants £54 to programme a new one!
 
you can programme yourself very easily , just needs 2 people to do and less that 5 minutes of your time ..... instructions courtesy of the discovery owners club .....

Open the bonnet and ask the assistant to hold down the bonnet switch. Either get into the car and close the door, or wind down the window and stand outside.

NOTE: If you vehicle is fitted with a separate immobiliser, switch it off - as if you were going to drive the vehicle.

Instructions 1 to 7 must be done within 8 seconds!

1) Switch ignition ON
2) Switch ignition OFF
3) Lock doors - using sill button (press down)
4) Unlock doors - using sill button (pull up)
5) Release bonnet switch
6) Switch ignition ON
7) Switch ignition OFF

If the alarm is correctly accessed, the horn will sound and the red alarm LED will light and stay on. It is now possible to programme the key fob(s).

NOTE: A maximum of 2 key fobs can be programmed.

Carry out instructions 8 - 10 within 2 minutes.

Press and HOLD down button on the first key fob until the alarm LED flashes a few times
9) repeat instruction 8 for the second key fob
10) The alarm LED will go out if both key fobs have been installed correctly

NOTE: If only one key fob is programmed, after instruction 8 turn the ignition ON and OFF to finalise the programming.

Thanks for the reply and confirming, that is exactly what I thought ;)

I have some spare D2 / Rover 75 PCB's I am trying to get at least 2 prepared before getting access to Nanocom, but having never done these Keys before I have posted a couple of questions here :-

Does that mean they don't work on a D2 ?
I read somewhere that they did, can't remember where now, thankfully I only paid £9.99 for it, then added the buttons, then paid some guy £5.99 yesterday to decode the bar code for me, then found I don't need the bar code if using Nanocom lol lol lol :rolleyes:

Sadly that Rover one is one of the 2 I have the 6 character code for, boo hoo wah wah grizzle grizzle etc :D
Looks like I need to find another D2 PCB ......................

Rofl, the amount of dosh I've wasted on this Discovery due to stuff like this ;)
Steep learning curve this one as I've never had a D2 before ;)

The rover fob will work but if the passive immobiliser is not disabled you'll have to give another unlock command on the fob if you unlocked the vehicle and didnt start it within 30 seconds or so then it will start, that's the only inconvenience
