I am thinking abount changing my 1975 s3 2.25 petrol engine for a 200 tdi diesel or a 2.5 diesel so that I can benefit from cheaper running cost and improved MPG.

What advice can you give me regarding fitting a diesel? will it fit straight in or will i need to make alterations? also will i need a new gear box, it currently has the origional 4 speed one inone in?;)

go for the 200tdi complete with the 5 speed box.
much better engine, and mpg too.

If you put a 200tdi and 5 speed box .You can no longer use freewheeling hubs, as you are in 4wd. all the time, otherwise totally agree with Ormus. b-b

Has anyone carried out this swap? What bits do you need apart from the engine and box? Any problems in fitting or do they go straight in?

decided to forget all the troubles of swopping with swopping the engine and i have bought a 200tdi disco instead and sold the series 3. thanks for the comments
