New diesel 110 help

Evening all!
I'm about to buy a 1989 110 3.5 v8 4c sw diesel turbo. All looking good, but whilst using a insurance comparison site the Landry in question comes up as Petrol!! And I can't seem to find any info on this size Diesel engine either. Are they any good to own? And I assume the mpg is poor to say the least? Any insight from you all would be hugely helpful
 
Well , AFAIK, the 110 was never produced with a 3.5 Diesel engine.

So If it is correct then I would say it has a transplant from another vehicle in it.

MOT History shows corrosion to the rear crossmember - is it new? Or are they chasing the rust.....?

I'm popping up to have a look tomorrow, Stevo. So I'll have a good look at the crossmember. I know, the colour's great! I'm going to be using it for my Gardening work, all being well!!

Well gentleman, I've been and inspected 'Hulk' and it is as you said a giant Nissan motor! Are they a good engine to own? The Landy is pretty tatty, but to be expected & mainly cosmetic. The chassis crossmembers are rusty but not too bad. £2500 does seem an ok deal!?!
She was running fine & drove/stopped well. The temp gauge was reading hot, but whether that is set up true, I don't know...
 
Do you think.... maybe because it's not the original engine but maybe original temp gauge, that's why it's reading in the red, even when it's just sitting there ticking over??

tricky one - if the temp sender is right for the engine, it doesn't mean its right for the gauge. How about a digital gauge? (if you buy it.)

Factor in another couple of grand to get it right. What else could you buy for 4500? Don't be swayed by the excellent colour - you could paint another one with a roller :)

My 96 300tdi cost me 4k to buy, but I spent nearly 2k in 2 years on it :(
 
I hope my wife doesn't read this!!!

I do think the 2500 is a good price. Just not too enginethingy savvy It's the 90mi trip back I'm concerned about. May have to rely on RAC to get back to Falmouth!!

They're heavy lumps - main problem is parts availability & cost of said parts when they do break, getting little ancillary items like hoses or brackets / etc is easy peasy for a landy Tdi - I had a friend with a TD42 in a patrol ( I was the colour of that landy with envy in all honesty), but it was such a bugger fixing the age related issues, some hose or fitting breaks / splits and you have to fork out 40 quid minimum and wait a week for it to turn up (or be handy on the tools and have plenty of free hours), not great for a daily driver for your self employed business.

Sleep on it and go and view another one or two methinks, hah - plus I can only imagine the degree of dog housing that will occur if the first impression it has on the wife is hooked up to an RAC truck :D
