my clutch is biting almost as soon as it lifts off the floor - been getting gradually lower for years - and non synchro gears are crunchy whatever I try, is it time for out with the old and in with the new.

Does it slip at all when driving?
Have a look to see how much slop is in the mechanical linkage from pedal to bell housing.

the crunching is recent, only just started. used to be just a slow change was needed moving up the gears, no need to double d, usually had to double on the way down.

had a look at the linkage as you suggested Blackburn, thanks for that, looks like the return spring needs replacing for one, the main problem seems to be with the pedal. looks like whoever did the last clutch didn't seem to see the need to put the locknuts back on. looking at the manual there should be two nuts either side of the pedal to hold it in place on the threaded spindle thing that connects the pedal to the bit that goes into the bellhousing. mine only has one and they were far apart

so I guess the nuts have moved over time,

had a fiddle with my nuts and the crunching has gone and the bite is higher. so that will do for now, will see if I can get a spring and a couple of nuts ordered tomorrow then fine tune it later.

bet if I had gone to a garage they would have stung me for a new clutch and a pile of labour.
