Hi folks,

I'm in need of a second opinion and wondered if you guys could provide some assistance.

My truck is a 98 NAS D1 with 122,000 kms on it so not overly old. I just had my head gaskets and rockers (all 16) done about 3 months ago by the dealer. Now I'm hearing a knock which sounds like a lifter knock to me. It's faint and only does it on cold starts (first thing in the morning or at the end of the day where the vehicle has been sitting a while) and lasts typically about 5 to 7 seconds, fades away and the engine then sounds smooth. This is on days where the temp is a little cooler.

The rockers were done to get rid of a tick I heard which it has gone away but my opinion is that this lifter knock is not normal in light of the recent work that was done on it. I indicated this to the dealer and the Service mgr said "it's normal".

As background info, a new owner took over the dealership. He owns mostly Ford and Chrysler dealerships. Since his take over in the summer of last year, all previous LR staff including certified techs with 9+ years of experience have all left. The new Service mgr comes from a Hyundai dealership and has no LR experience of any sort. Similar situation with the techs. Most are young apprentices.

What is your opinion of what the Service mgr said? Is this knock normal after the rockers were done recently or is he just brushing me off on something they should be responsible for?

I don't like the sound of it I think you should get a certified LR dealer to check it out and drive it. mine is doing the same thing sort of.
