Would anyone with the Nanocom CSV viewer be willing to have a look at these results and offer some interpretation?

It's in a Dropbox folder but will download from the link.

I've had an odd starting issue lately, 2000 Defender TD5 Manual. The glowplug light comes on as normal with the ignition, but if I try to do it again for some extra heat it doesn't come on - not sure if that's normal or not I've never noticed before.

Also when it's cold (like now - 4C or something) it will start and puff out some whiteish smoke and misfire for a few seconds (up to maybe 5-10 seconds) then it's fine.

The only fault code I had today for Air Flow High - but cleared that and it didn't come back. I've had the vehicle four years and never noticed rough starting.

The Nanocom has also recorded some data for the Wastegate Modulator that isn't present on Defenders? One thing on there which does look odd (to my untrained eye) is the information for Cylinder 3 which is very different to the other four.

Cheers,
Tom.

The vehicle is a TD5 Defender Manual with Dynachip's fuel map, allisport intercooler, discovery transfer box, 33" wheels - if that means anything in terms of affecting the Nanocom results from a standard defender.

Rough starting ties in with the high air flow reading, as without a properly functioning maf sensor the car reverts to a default setting which takes it a few seconds to achieve

If it was faulty would it not have thrown another fault up ? It only has the rough (not delayed) start and white/grey smoke (smells of diesel) when it’s a cold start. Could it be as simple as glow plugs? I never thought they would make much difference and it’s not even been that cold recently

Glow plugs on td5 are controlled by the ecu and carry on working even when the light goes out,
There not expensive so change them, white smoke on start up could be unburnt diesel which is a symptom of bad glow plug as is roughness for a few seconds after starting as the cylinders are cold, also only 4 of the 5 cylinders have a glow plug so number 5 cylinder is always going to be a bit slower to get upto temp.

I might check he glow plug relay and see if there is a fuse as well as I am sure normally you can switch the ignition on and off a few times to get the plugs to heat more, which I can’t seem to do any more. I would have expected a fault code if it was an electrical problem though?

If you have Nanocom then give it a run with it plugged in you will soon see the air flow and this will tell you what the MAF sensor is feeding to the ECU.
If i turn on the ignition and let the plugs time out then turn it off and on again the heater plug light stays off, must be in the logic.

Air flow looks normal, it was cylinder 3 on the nanocom results I posted that concerned me, but it may well be just the glow plugs by the sound of it. Would have expected a glow plug fault if one or more was faulty

See what you mean about Cylinder 3, a few thoughts I had is is your injector harness old? could be giving a flaky signal to injector 3, how good is your battery Voltage seems to be held up by the alternator but its up and down.

It’s quite new (few months) but wasn’t a genuine one (bearmach I think). Battery is about 3 years old it’s a Case tractor battery

Dont know if it helps but here are some runs I did with mine. Look at the cylinder plots all are more like your number 3my battery Voltage seems higher too.
Not 100% sure they are attached let me know if you get them

I checked that log, it's certain that you have charging issues, IMO you need this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROV...635818&hash=item440871262a:g:c7wAAOSwJ7RYWAAQ , as about the injector roughness check for oil in the ECU red plug and if there is none there check the upper injector wiring plug where it connects to the head, if you find oil there replace the injector loom... the glow plug thing can be the result of low battery voltage though you need to unplug a plug and measure for voltag in it while the warning lamp is on or immediately after the engine was started

Thanks Raywin. Your cylinder plots are within a far lesser scale than my No.3 !

Thanks sierrafery, will check battery, glow plugs, relay etc tomorrow.

Anyone know where he glow plug relay is on early (2000) TD5 Defender? Can’t find it on rave it’s on about an engine compartment fuse box pics below. There is only a few fuses under the drivers seat and more in the centre of the dash. Nothing on any stickers about glow plugs

By the way if you need a battery I bought this one a couple of years ago and its very good so far
Bit of a twist on the leads to connect it and glued some plastic onto the battery retaining clamp to make sure it could not touch the + lead
