..yep..you can go two ways...total original resto...and be far to scared to drive it..and if you do its slow,uncomfortable.etc....
or...make it upto date...like i have..mine runs toyota v8,new everything,p38 leather seats..its like silk to drive...
heres an old thread.
Land Rover Owner :: View topic - now here's my proper v8...
much has changed since these photos taken..ie full length webasto elecy roof, alloys, winch bumper, snorkle, twin either side stainless exhaust..etc.....adding air suspension and supercharger at the moment....
have fun..2 doors soooo nice...dont be afraid to attack it and make it drivable..
BUT dont junk anything..sell it all on ebay..even the ripped seats..people will pay for them...mad buggers!
yeah , they may be coming off and the holes welded up, just depends how far I want to go with paint and when!
lets face it most of these met there end as rusty bobtails in the early nintys
well..as to ride height..thats why am fitting air suspension..its abit unstable at over 80+,but its detting there..the heavy winchy bumper i just made is helping keep the front down..
air con..fitted that to my 4 door..its real easy, just rip one off any classic..you need the lower dash that holds it all..
re interior..its a PIG to fit anything other than classic seats..the p38 ones in mine ment transmission tunnel and rear tub modding..alot!..say goodbye to the lt95 handbrake..
re lt 95..see my add for overdrive..though best to junk it and fit an lt77 or r380..i use lt85 just because its the only landy 5speed that will take 300hp..but thats to go soon as the supercharger will give her 400 and i think it will need a nissan patrol manual box to cope..
as to cost and time..well..i bought a complete 72,but v knackered and rusty...i removed body, sorted chassis, rebuilt axles, steering etc..as new now..the body i replaced, just was not worth sorting..ie find the steel!!then total respray..body has 40mm lift..springs are scorpion as is corrected arms etc..rust proofing...gone back to steel and cold galvansied then dimitroled then grease/oil coated..which i will steam off each year and replace..i intend to keep this one!!..then..to the engine and transmission...
rebuilt lt85.lt230.cnc machined flywheel, homemade adapter plate etc.. lexus 4l v8,late model 32v quad cam just under 300hp..funnnnnn..but not enough fun..hense getting supercharged..using harrops m112,homemade manifold and intercooler etc..ready now to bolt on,but need to sort the air sus first..dont want to die just yet!
cost..gave up counting at 10k..time, gave up counting at 700hrs..all done myself,no help, other than gearbox rebuild and flywheel...
since pics has winch bumper, lpg, snorkel(to get cold air in her and more hp),virtually straight though twin exit stainless exhaust..oh the noise...who needs a stereo? fulll lenght ex citroen berlingo webasto roof.(so nice in summer)and so much more..i dought it will ever end..
it turns heads...though the purists think i am the devil..jap engine in a 72!!!???..still £100 insurance, zero tax ,35+mpg (gas equiv.) and rangie sport beating performance..who cares??
so my advice...do it...rip it apart..sort ALL the rust, every bit, then go to town...but use classic interior, not p38 unless you intend not to use it just yet...junk the engine and box, fit alate 4.6 and auto her..(more power and more mpg)..of course you could fit a proper v8, but to be honest the work involved was silly..
have fun..will post a recent pic once i find the camara download lead if you wish??
