Been on here a couple of days and the advice so far has been fantastic.
Here she is a 1968 series 2a on a galvanised chassis with a 200 DI engine.
main issue is what to do first.
my current thought is to do the timing belt as I have no idea when that was last done, or am I making a mountain for my first job??
next I'm thinking full service as again no idea when it was last done.
Any advice gratefully received.

Looking at the pictures you have a 200di engine which is just a 200Tdi which has had the turbo removed.
If you do not know the history getting the timing belt done along with a full service of the whole vehicle is definitely a good idea. But you will need some special tools to do the belt. Timing kit, crank damper puller and crank locking tool.
 
This’ll sound a bit odd. But I’m sure I walked past this last weekend, it’s on Arran isn’t it! Clocked it straight away as it’s the same age as our ‘new’ 2a which was happily waiting in Ardrossan for us, to take us home after climbing Goatfell. Crazy small world.

The bulkhead needs some repair and preservation.It and the chassis are the heart of any Land rover,any thing else is a spanner [and perhaps angle grinder to replace ;)]
 
I would always give the brakes a once over before worrying about whether it can go! By the look of it it could have some well corroded brake lines and possibly seized wheel cylinders. With single circuit brakes one leak and your not stopping!
Love the careworn look though as long as it's sound under the skin!

Luckily the brakes are one thing the previous owner did get sorted. probably with the same mind set brakes first.. :)
