The 90 failed its MoT today on a worn trackrod end. I took it in at 9 am. I phoned at 11 to hear it had failed and that they had ordered a new TRE for me and could fit it today. I would normally do that kind of thing myself, but it was raining and I thought "oh, let them get on with it". By 2 pm the truck was fixed, re-tested and ready for collection, and the bill for the TRE was £66 including parts. If I'd done my usual thing, I would have ordered the parts today, then waited for delivery, then waited for a dry day to crawl underneath, then cursed and sweated and banged my knuckles until it was done. And then had to re-present the truck for a re-test. Waving a bit of plastic and then waiting a couple of hours was far easier. I hope this doesn't become a habit.

It is a slippery slope.....LOL.

At least it is on the road for another Year.:D:D

Cheers
Thank you! Yes, it's got its ticket for another 12 months, and it is good to have it looked over by someone else when I have a long journey in it this week. Best of all, I messed up the headlight alignment when I fitted new bulbs, and last night I hastily re-aligned them against the shed door. They were perfect.

The garage understands the concept of 'service moments'
Bet they weren't a main dealer
Older man, oil under fingernails, grumpy as f but has looked after several vehicles of mine, knows his stuff and doesn't overcharge. He's a keeper.

As I've said many times, finding yourself an indie garage and building a relationship based on trust is worth its weight in gold.
You trust him to do a good job for a reasonable cost and he'll trust you to accept his judgement and pay up in a timely fashion.
Look after him, and at least send a card at Christmas!

I have never sent him a card (not sure he's a 'card' type of person) but I do make sure I pay him promptly, and use a debit rather then a credit card as I know how steep the charges can be. He's a Volvo specialist, and I feel he is always a bit disappointed that I don't rock up in a classic 245 or an 850R.

Definitely a sign of getting old. Stop it! I'm sure that stuffs contagious, if you start spreading it on here we'll all go down with it soon. :( :p

sounds a better plan to me mate, all happy and legal now that's the main thing

That’s good service and cost. Scudding around underneath a landy at this time of year in the open is deeply unpleasant.

Perhaps we should have a 'my garage is a keeper' thread, for those of us looking for non rippy off old skool spannerers
There is definitely a shortage round my way
Might as well go the whole hog and do a 'Best Auld Folks Home Around Here' thread. ;)

Good move, keep the knuckles intact this time of year, keep the mechanics for summer !!

+1
My indie that I'd used for years stopped trading last year so I'm using the local garage that carries out the MOT on both our cars. I've been a regular customer for several years with our (non-LR) daily, always pay the bill on collection of the car & have put work their way by recommendations. So far they have done one service on my RRC & I'm happy with the job they did on it.

Little garages are getting harder to find. Mine does MoT then let's me grease joints props etc. Well he cannot find holes in my galv chassis:)
For the pleasure of this he also gets to see the series 1 & take it out on a road test. Yes the motor is mot/tax exempt but a once over before it travels abroad is worth it.
Extra box of teabags gets 30 mins ramp time ;)

Wish there was more DIY service ramps around, I guess there's no money in it and the garages round here are too busy
I've got a small inspection pit in one of my garages at home, but the Landy is so tall it won't fit through the door... the pit is too shallow anyway, you end up with neck ache / back ache. it's actually easier to use a crawler to get under it

was at one to help a fellow landie owner out the other Month, it had fully equipped bays with ramps , most tools you could think of, very useful for those tricky jobs that a ramp would make easier.

Cheers
