Just having an argument with a mate. He has a very nice '95 TDi 300 Def 90 with BFG muds and a Disco transfer box and he reckons that he only gets 20mpg on average even on a run:eek::eek::eek::eek:

My wife has a Disco TDi 300 and I've had several and we always get at least 30mpg - so what's going on??

Is 20 normal for a well-maintained Def 90 TDi 300? __________________

it depends on my 300TDI 90 , with winch and insa saharas i only get about 20-23 around town and about 30 on a decent run

40 mpg for a 200 tdi sounds high to me. I have a 110, 200tdi and over the last twelve months I get 30 mpg mixed driving. I would imagine a 300 tdi must be around the same.
If he is only getting 20 mpg I would look at air filter, injectors, fuel filter etc.

Thanks for that.

He's already changed all the filters and together we changed the engine oil, and both diff oils.

Also he checked the odometer against his GPS on the way home and it was reading 20% low, so that puts him nearer to 24mpg but it still seems low to me, for "on a run" mpg.

I get 35 mpg on my 300tdi hcpu defender, about 25-27 mpg in town.
How much does tires size and thread matters on fuel consumption do you think?
I run on Grabbers At2 (great in mud, good in snow, scary on ice, I got lots of instant white hair this winter in sweden...)
:D

Big chunky mud tyres hurt MPG a lot. I saw a drop of 5mpg when I changed my previous 110 from A/Ts to Insa Turbo M/Ts. If he is getting 24mpg on muds, he would get around 29-30 on A/Ts or road tyres which would be about right. ;)

I have quite a lot of gear on my 110 rack etc plus MT tyres. However I have also done a fair bit to improve mpg.

On a 400 mile run last weekend I did over 31mpg - when the MTs finally expire I will be fitting AT's.

Here she is at a very cold Wells by the Sea in Norfolk.......

my bog standard 300tdi 90 does around 35mpg normal driving, It drops if I do motorways or just short runs. Adding anything that upsets the already poor aerodynamics, such as a roofrack, bull bar or even lightguards will increase fuel consumption as will running chunky tyres. Possibly the biggest effect on mpg though is the drivers right foot.

Nah 20 is too low, I get 25 MIN, 28 at a push.

25 mpg was the manufacturer spec for the Tdi, so anything above this has to be a bonus:D

Mine (300Tdi, SWB) is averaging 24 - 26 mpg - mostly short runs on country lanes. Would like it to do more, but content where it is

Got a thread on mpg on general land rover talk.been going a few days so be nice if we could keep it in the same place.

I don't know whats gone wrong. I had been getting 30mpg on my 200tdi 110. I recently fitted a snorkel now its down to the 23mpg mark. I even gave it a treat and put a new air filter in it.
