Hi,

I’m wracking my brains as to my mpg issues. I have a td5 Auto stage one remap. Guaranteed it has a lot of mod on but I’m gonna writing 15.8 mpg on it?

Driving style isn’t too bad and it’s mainly urban driving.

The mods weigh around 180kg but that’s the equivilant of two adults sitting in it.

Setting aside weigh my and driving style, are there any issues that could cause such fuel consumption?

I have the most bog-standard unmodified D2 TD5 there is. It is 1999 on the original engine and box and gives me 32 - 33 mpg. I can go offroading in it without bolting on loads of extras, because it is already designed to do it. I don't see the point of tuning the engine as it sits in a brick-shaped car that is not designed to go fast. I think people tinker far too much with their vehicles. I have a second car with a 3.5 V8 to go fast in.

What dimension tyres? if they are more than 5% bigger than standard that's the problem, provided it's not some management issue too like bad MAF, sticking brakes or something, go all around after a drive and touch the wheels and the handbrake drum to make sure nothing is stuck

IMO it's more about throttle response and low rpm power not about going fast

I'm always amazed by the variation in mpg reported. I've recorded every litre of diesel that's gone into my 2001 ES Td5 auto since I bought it 60,000 miles ago and the cumulative total is 21.49. It has dropped slightly over the period from nearer 22.5.

This is normal driving always up to speed limits and including about 1,500 miles towing a 1400 Kg caravan every year.

Absolutely standard, not remapped or anything. I regularly plug nanocom in to record fuelling just to check all sensors are working correctly.

I have similar car like yours (but with manual box), remapped, slightly lifted, winch installed, big wheels (18") and I have around 28 mpg fuel consumption (mixed usage but not off roading).
It was a bit more (26) when I bought but I have done some mods like EGR removal, new MAF, new injector harness....

Same here pretty much. I have a yr 2000 TD5 that I do about 15k miles/yr in. It gets 30-32 in daily use and up to 36 on a run. Admittedly I don't often go much over 60mph, but then I don't often go much slower either - amazing how well a Disco with ACE and decent ATs will go around corners! One thing I have found is that I have a very smooth driving style. I very rarely uses the brakes in the car or on the motorbike, so I think that helps a lot. I'm one of those rare people who seems to get near enough the manufacturers claimed figures in daily use.

I haven't bolted any tat to mine (although I may buy a snorkel at some point) and run standard tyres. It tows the boat , off roads, transports guns, muddy dogs, children and tons of DIY materials and garden waste (SLS for the win!).

If you're worried about fuel consumption, then probably a LandRover isn't for you. They do after all have the aerodynamics of a brick in a wet paper bag... And the engines don t tend to be known for their thermal efficiency either.

It’s a stage 1 remap, designed for torque

Not worried, just wondering how there is such a difference in mpg. I got 23mpg when I drove to he Sahara, maybe just the fact I now have a bull bar and also it was urban driving. Will check the MAF and break drum

I don't use mine as a daily and it is not played with other than 18 inch wheels and at a guess I get 15-20 mpg with local use.

Hmmmm that’s strange, there is a guy saying he gets 19mpg towing a 3.5ton trailer.

Thinking maybe an injector?

Just got 15.4mpg. Thinking maybe the mad sensor has gone and will try and sort the wastegate tomorrow incase this is stiff. Gives the car a terrible range of 300 miles :(
