Hi Guys
Mine failed MOT today

rotation orientation wrong on the tyres.. DOH
Handbrake ineffective ( Transfer oil seal leaking) AGAIN

Now the reason for post

Front radius arm bushes shot
Have looked on famous fours website they say i need 4 of the front axle end and 2 for the other end..?
Is that per arm or for the kit to do both N/S & O/S

if it is per arm, is it worth going the poly bush route??

Tyre rotations tomorrow...

All this tyre rotation marking is a load of bollix. If you have a spare and the orientation is for the nearside does that mean you can't fit it if you have a flat on the offside until it has been removed and changed over??
Never mattered for 90 years or so.
Do we now have to carry two spare wheels????????????????

Valid point Irish

And unfortunatly i did fit them DOH
Never even looked ( it was dark in the corner of the workshop

Cheers for the link Redhand
Had done a search , but the first couple of threads were not that useful

will let you know how i get on

Polybush Comfort bushes and a new steering damper transformed my ride / handling quality, but the OEM bushes might do just as well, not sure if they would last as long.

I agree Irish. Rotational tyres are a pain in the arse. It has to be something to do with how they shed water. At one time on a service you changed the wheels around diagonaly to counteract road camber induced wear, now with these abortions you cannot do that.

Yeah i had one of the change on the rim to put the wear on the inside now i am going to have to have another one doen to get the rotations right

Off to the workshop soon, via the vets

2 expensive things together

Might as well shoot some clays after and make a day of it

The OE bushes on the P38 need a special tool to compress them into the arm; the bushes od is 2mm more than the hole they fit into. The tool costs £80 depending where you get it. Complete set poly-bushes £60. And a lot quicker to fit. Maybe they`ll not last as long, but your choice..

Gone the poly bush route

don't want to be messing around in the workshop when i will only have 3 days to get it MOT'd again as am away next week

Tyre rotation done ( Dead right it is to do with water shedding according to the tyre place)

Yippe it passed yesterday

spent saturday in the workshop

Had a bit of an issue getting the arms off
Had to cut the bolts with a disc cutter at both ends tried heat but no good
but once off heated the bushes then pressed them out easy

poly bushes from famous four come in to halfs makes them very easy to fit didn't even need the press

Burned all the oil off handbrake shoes and rough them up with a file same with the drum

Handbrake works fantastic now

transfer seal only did it 4 months ago so reckon the shaft has some wear, so i rammed another one in behind exsisting one so we will see

When you change one of these it pays to examine the flange bearing surface. If there is any sign of wear (reduction in diameter or a step) measure seal intrusion and put new seal a couple of mil further in. Or of course fit a new flange.

Do a search for Barnwell Services located in Smethwick, West Midlands.
They do a brilliant shaft repair kit especially for grooved shafts caused by oil seal friction. Have used them on several Crankshaft pulleys and on machine tool repairs..they are the dogs bollix.

Just thought I'd mention that I polybushed my P38 with genuine polybush orange coloured ones and really wish I hadn't bothered. The ride got noisier, harder and they do not last very long at all.
In fact I had to changed the Panhard rod bushes after one year and 2000 miles and again the year later at 2500 miles! (I don't use it that much by the way!)

I know you've done it now but my advise to anyone else would be to save yourself the hassle and fit genuine bushes, That's what I'm slowly going back to now as and when the overhard poly ones wear out.

Craig.

funny the brother in law has poly all round on his disco 2

hasn't had to change one yet and he is a farmer so it is towing and off the road a lot

the ones on the radius arms of the P38 were def easier to fit than OE ones and ride / steering seems better so far

will keep you posted on the wear of them
