EVERY TIME you get a situation like that when some other light comes on dim just as you describe, it is 99.9999% certain that you have an EARTHING problem, and it is right at the light unit involved. It NEVER does any harm, and it may do a whole lot of good, to run a separate earth cable (use a decent heavy cable) from the earth tag of the lights unit to a really good earth point on the chassis somewhere.

End of problem for keeps.

From experience, first thing I'd look at is the plastic connector on the back of the headlight bulb. They have a nasty habit of melting. You can get replacement connectors from motor factors. Easy to check and easy fix. Don't know why they melt though.
