Hi all,

I have the discovery 2 2002 and the power steering fluid level is very low (below the minimum, I can't see any obvious leaks). I obviously need to make sure the level is good. The recommended fluid is the Cold climate Power Steering Fluid STC50519 which I know is a clear green colour, however the colour of the existing fluid is a clear red... (assuming previous owner used some cheapo halfords stuff or something but I don't know) will it do damage to mix the two? (will damage already have been done if the incorrect type has been used?) Will it be good enough to either top it up and mix or if I syringe as much out as possible from the reservoir and fill up with the STC50519 ?

Many thanks.

the system will run fine on atf dexron 2 or 3 as is probably in it now it does on td5 defenders, you can mix both but if you want to change it back to ccf empty as much as possible put a length of suitable hose on the steering box bleed nipple and other end in a container, slacken and keeping topping res up till box runs clear ccl you will need to work the box lock to lock and engine running

“power steering fluid level is very low (below the minimum, I can't see any obvious leaks).”

Seems like a serious lack of maintenance on the vehicle, there’s a leak or had a leak of fluid which should have been spotted. I
check my fluid levels every every month and never had to top up the power steering reservoir and still has the fluid that it left the factory with. But as your using. “Specialist” the PS system should be fine afterwards. :)

Possibly so I only bought it a week or so ago and it's been on the drive due to no tax yet. You check your levels every month? What kind of.. .. does that? Yeah I'm taking to a trusted local land rover specialist so I don't have to check the levels every month... jeez :)

Every thing that can be checked from under the bonnet, power steering and brake fluid, gearbox fluid, engine oil and coolant, is checked in minutes, as my disco gets washed often, every week sometimes and the bonnet is opened to wipe dry the engine bay checking fluids once a month is very easy to do.
All much the same for two other cars I own, then there is my wife’s car sometimes, all vehicles are serviced once a year as required. :)
