After just about getting the hang of MIG welding the rear floor on my tdi have got to the next hurdle - aluminium welding.

I have found fairly large holes on both sides of the rear side panels (inside where the doors close, near rear wheel arches) and am pretty sure these are ally??
Have done some research and it seems that I can make the following mods to my 150T MIG to get it to weld aluminium:
-change to ally wire
-use oversized nozzles
-double the line speed
-reduce tension on wire
Next step to find out where I can get hold of some aluminium sheet..
SO (have done a search!) anyone else had a go at welding these with a MIG? Any advise appreciated

Discovery wheel arches are steel! stick a fridge magnet on it if it sticks it's not ally,!!!

You will also need to change your gas to pure Argon.

Is your welder pulsed?

If not you will have to "push" the weld along to stop too much heat getting into the ali and burning through.

if yer want to do ally with a mig , change the liner in the hose/ torch, to a new clean one, the steel wire residue/ rust results in a poor , over heated weld , everythin else yer listed it right, watch yer wire feed roller tension and feed speed !

i some how remember disco's are steel ! or yer doin a fender up too?

rear side body panels are alli on a steel cage so wheel arches & inner body strengtheners etc are steel. Roof is steel but door skins are Alli

Cheers guys - I'm an eedjot, thought I'd give it a go yesterday with steel wire and was suprised to find it keyed with no probs. Might be because the rear wings are actually steel then!!
