Sorry if this seems stupid. I have put the back set into the folded position to take some rubbish to the skip and when I got back the seat would unfold to normal. Had a quick look and the middle seat belt was stuck so I unscrewed the cover and took off the retaining nut. The seat is back in the normal position, but the seat belt still won't pull out. Is it broken or is there a catch to release it?

Thanks for the replies. I've had a look and can't see if something is missing or if there is anything 'extra' laying around. The belt itself has almost totally retracted.

I'm looking at a replacement on ebay (Freelander rear centre seat belt ash grey | eBay) that looks similar, but my model (2003 TD4) isn't listed as being compatible. Is there any difference between a 2.0Di and a TD4?

hi,
recently had same problem. seatbelt needs replacing. replacement cost is about £50 from dealer.
If time is still an issue for the MOT, then take out rear seat. It has to come out anyway to replace the seatbelt.
Replacing seatbelt - take out large rear seat, its held on by four bolts - two in the rear passenger comp and two you will see when seats folded.(you dont have to remove carpet). Remove seat from car, its easier with two people.
Remove covers over upper and lower seatbelt fixings . Undo large nut at top fixing(you can now open the seat) remove covers at each end of the seat(hinge points). Next bit more fiddly - make sure you have the correct tool for removing the seat hinge bolts (star shaped tool, most screwdriver sets arent large enough, go to halfords and buy set -about £25 for eight sizes because you need the next size up for the seatbelt).
Once you have tool bits remove hinge screws, two one end, one the other. seat should come apart.
Prise off trim from underneath, the seat fabric and padding should come off, revealing lower fixing points.
Undo single star shaped screw and seatbelt should be free.
Remove plastic cover(if you havent done so already) - gently release one side of the small joining plate(fine screwdriver or similiar).

further to the above, when i fitted a replacement seatbelt the same problem happened. the problem seems to be the small plastic button fitted at the upper part of the webbing. If this slips into the plastic cowl(only 2cm) the belt is now locked.Only way i could release it was to retake off the upper part of the seatbelt(large single nut) and keep jiggying it around until it released. Problem then is to refit the cowl with the button on the proper side(needed three hands). At the moment works fine but will either have to replace with a larger button(easiest) or try to convince landrover that ALL belts that have this problem are faulty(they must know its needs a larger stop). Suspect this is the problem that lots of other people have had.

Hi there, I am having the same problem with the centre rear seat belt. I did open up one side of the seat belt retractor (*not* the side with the spring in it), all the plastic parts are there but they have shifted around. Does anyone have pictures or instructions on how to put them back together? Or does anyone know where to get an affordable replacement? Thanks!

If know ones got a pic I'll take one at the weekend if you still need it.

Much easier to put it back working with the seat in the normal upright position. Take out the roller thing and have a look. You may be able to guess where things go.

Hi, I'm having the same issue with my 2006 Freelander. I've taken the seatbelt rotary system apart and found that all the plastic components are in place, but I'm not sure they are in the right order. If anyone has a photo of these components in the correct formation it would be greatly appreciated.

2x pic's of the middle belt reel fitted the correct way up. The plastic case on the right hand side holds the recoil spring. The plastic bit on the left hand side contains the control mechanism to release/feed and stop the belt.

If you take the recoil plastic oft the main metal bracket you will see the plastic fitting and the coil inside as below. When putting this back the middle bit of the coil will fit in the slot in the plastic thing. It will all screw back to the main metal bracket after some turns to take up the tension of the spring, depending on coil strength. It's easier to locate the plastic bit and the bracket, then turn the plastic with it all connected, then fit the 2 securing screws. If the belt doesn't recoil fully at the end then this bit will need to be done again with more turns. Recoil pushed into the middle in the pic.

Pic's below show the content of the mechanism from the left hand side plastic. This is the tricky bit. To get the cover oft you need to squeeze and push the 2x plastic rivits. There's also some small clips round the edge which need released to get the cover oft.

When fitting it all back together you need to make sure the seat belt mechanism is set like the first pic below, and stays in that position at that angle whilst being moved/fitted to the rear of the seat. The trick is to have the seat back support in the normal upright locked position, and not horizontal or the mechanism won't work. If not then it will all go wrong and you'll need to start again as it will lock itself whilst allowing the belt to feed in but not out. Note the position of the spinning hand and the little peg thing. Get these in the wrong position and it won't work propper.

Pic below is the same as above, but with the FL1 upside down. In this position the metal weight falls and the mechanism is locked when you try to pull the belt. This is what happens when yer FL is upside down and the belt locks.

Thanks for the information, unfortunately this appears to be a different mechanism than mine, I have red, yellow and white components that are different shapes, but thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. If you have any info on this mechanism it would be great. Thanks.

We need someone with the same year of FL1 to take theirs apart and take some pic's.
Failing that a pic of yours so we can see what's in it.
