hi all

I'm just wondering if people know wot size the bolts are on the rear suspension of a '98MY Brit spec d1.

I'm told that some are imperial while others are metric, and given that I've found the same to be true on other parts of the vehicle I believe them.

It's mainly the bolts that pass thru bushes etc that I'm concerned with where the wrong ones could cause rattles or nuts coming loose, not so much ones where anything will do

Many thanks

98 should be metric its pre 300s that can be imperial, your vehicle should be all metric apart from damper bracket on underside of diff which is whitworth

Thanks for that jm

I recently found my front bumper bolts are 9/16 head same as prop bolts (is that 3/8 bolt I can't remember) and a mate told me his '96my had imperial in the rear trailing arm to axle bush/bracket and when he changed for the nearest fit metric they liked to come loose, its just that I'm soon to be changing mine hence the curiosity

Cheers

your right thinking about it body mounts were still 3/8unf but most should be metric , with nylocs blue are metric white imperial

Well I'm embarrassed to admit this but although noticing the colour differences I hadn't twigged that was why so thanks for that!

Yeah apart from the prop bolts that we all know about, everything else I had come across had been metric until wanting to remove my front bumper to aid waxoyling and after finding a 14mm wouldn't go on I picked up a 15mm and carried on...then it got tight, then it slipped, then I lost some bark and then I proceeded to swear at Land Rover for not being able to make their f*****g minds up!

I've just had a peepo on paddocks and it would appear according to their listing that there are a few imperial nuts and bolts loitering about even on my age bus

its when stuff changes ,body mounts like props havent really changed since the early 70s most has, early d1s where still imperial suspension fastenings as were still an earlier rrc,but iirc by the time 300 came metric was used, lr had times of rationalisation ,1980 and 94 were 2 big ones

Yeah that makes sense and also ties in with things people have said before

I did just notice while perusing paddocks the different coloured nuts for mm/af, I can't believe I havnt picked up on that before haha

shouldnt think many have, theres reasons why stuff has lingered on certain items where the general build is metric, basic prop design hasnt been updated whereas most stuff has

In other words it shows how many things have never been changed for aaaaages, weather that's because it didn't need it or because Land Rover couldn't be bothered to look into it could be open for debate ha.

Do you mind me asking if your Land Rover specific or general engineer? Looking at your, erm, experience of life and guessing you didn't train in the last few years, I'm guessing your wot I'd call a proper engineer!

Landrover source their parts from Birmingam manufactures who, when told that all nuts and bolts need to be metric because of EU regulations, said feck off, we're not changing for them garlic eating surrender monkeys. As a result, landrover have to sneak a few metric bits in under the cover of darkness.

i trained as an agricultural engineer then moved into land rovers at an lr official reconditioners, i got the job largely as i was the only one of the applicants that knew how to spill time an inline injection pump and had no issue rebuilding gear boxes, though i found out later manager wasnt aware lr never used them, they used rotary,we did everything from machining blocks and heads, engine rebuilds ,complete transmission rebuilds etc etc to full vehicle rebuilds and new low volume builds for lr ,lr would supply every part and we would build a new unit for them, also did a lot with the mod and police in northern ireland with their land rovers, ive been doing similar but on a lesser scale at home for a good few years now

Good effort, you should be capped with yourself!
When you say rebuilding vehicles for land rover were you doing special vehicles and utilities aswell then?

Now you mention transmission, with 33" tyres on a 300 d1 I would like some gearing back, would you buy a defender transfer box or put a set of ashcroft gears in mine, mines done 100k and has just started leaking but not sure if it's intermediate shaft or not yet. I think it's about 13-14% I'm looking for
