Draining the oil is a pleasure that always makes me smile, since I bought a Difflock drain valve about 13 yrs ago. Swapping the filter has never been a laughing matter until today.
First off I lay under Landy and put my arms around the diff (as per norm) and slackened the filter. Then I pushed my specially cut 1.5l carton over it like this.

The carton is held up in position with a string tied up through the handle, like this.

Back under the Landy I unscrew the filter by gripping it through the carton. The filter drops off and lies in the carton. I had a piece of wood ready to keep the carton from swinging away with the filter in it.

This keeps the drips from the filter housing dripping in to the carton and not on to the diff or drice.
Then I had a cup of tea to allow it to stop dripping. Then I carefully lowered the carton down in front of the diff and past panhard and drag link.

You can see how the carton is cut and how the string goes up through the handle, which helps hold the carton upright.
The oil from the filter and what drbbled out of the housing can now be poured in to and old container through the carton handle.

Not a drop spilled. Nice :)

That is ingenious! Great post, thanks for sharing your idea.
I especially like the pouring of oil back through the handle, brilliant :)

NIce and simple hack... I like this.:)

Can you now turn you brain to the td5 oil filter change please......that is a right PITA.:(

Cheers

I use an old bread bag, right size and no holes. Not worried about the odd drip just do not like old oil running down my arm.;) Nice idea though for those who's life would be made a missery if they contaminated the drive.

Same as @freelance and @tottot I use a plastic bag, usually a bin liner, mainly to stop me arm getting weed on .. but I like this idea too .. :)

I use the plastic bag method on the boat, the oil filter is mounted horizontally on the engine, so there is always spillage.

As a failsafe, I have an oil absorbent mat in the bilge under the engine. The mats cost a quid, so if they absorb any oil for any reason, they can be removed and thrown away, and another one inserted.

I have been known to position a funnel to divert the flow of oil into a receptacle rather than all over the steering gear ...

Well, it's taken me donkeys years to come up with this method while having a 300Tdi. Not having a Td5 will probably take 20 yrs to come up with a plan. If you're happy with that timescale, I'll turn my mind to it. ;)

Carrier bag
Been doing that for years. Never been 100% successful though. Filter ends up akin to trying to hold an eel still with one wet hand. Something always goes wrong and there's a spillage. Then what do you do with a plastic bag with 3/4 litre of dirty oil and an eel like filter?

The plastic bag should be fairly effective on a Td5 too, although the access is quite bad.

If you spin the filter off quickly, you shouldn't end up with all that much oil in the bag.

TD5 RAVE

Oil filters

The Td5 engine features two types of oil filter; the main filter is a standard disposable cartridge-type full-flow oil filter which is augmented with a by-pass centrifuge filter used to filter out particulate matter having a diameter smaller than 15 micron but greater than 3 micron.

The LR Maintenance Schedule is in the attached files. Look at Page 2 'It is recommended that' for advice on arduous operating conditions.

As the RAVE that comes from is several years out of date, it's entirely possible that intervals specified currently are different, but the principle will be the same...

It is only the cartridge filter that is hard to remove cleanly. The centrifugal housing is always empty when you remove the top.
