me disco breaks then fixes itself help

hi all
ive got a problem with my disco ime hoping someone might help me solve.
I may be a bit long winded but i figured the more detail i give the more chance ive got of someone picking up on the problem.Right its a 1993 200 tdi 150000 miles and in pretty good shape and drives really well.I bought it nearly two years ago and for the first three months had no problems at all.so i decided to service it.I changed all oils and filters, air and oil filters were gen land rover,diesal filter was from halfords.(the reason ive pointed out halfords is i know someone whos shogun wouldnt run with an halfords diesal filter he bought.)anyway about a week later i was on the m11 late at night doing about 55 and it started to lose power and eventually died.after pulling in to the hard shoulder i waited a few mins and tried it and it started i drove for about 200 yds and it died again.yet again i pulled into hard shoulder.waited 5 mins tried it again.it started up and ran perfectly for sixty miles home. anyway i ran a post on landyzone and we concluded lift pump or sedimentor.(i didnt know about sedimentor when i did service )anyway sedimentor was half full of gunge which i cleaned out and reftted with new seals.i also got a lift pump from bearmach which i didnt fit as car was running well.anyway last weekend on a21 55 mph it done same thing again. know worrys i thought, fit me knew lift pump . which i did.Lo and behold it started up and has run perfectly ever since untill today ,buggers done it again 6.30 in morning 55 mph dies waited 5 mins and it starts and has run ok since.Has anyone any thoughts on this.i would be most gratefull for any advice . thanks.

try another fuel filter first.

does your disco have a 1 button or 2 button fob?
 
hi chaps thanks for the quik replies ive thought the same myself i will change filter tomorrow.re fuel tank i forgot to mention in my post each time this has happend the tank has been low but i didnt think it was low enough to cause problems,it was off the red but its well worth considering.thanks ps would you know how to clean tank can it be done in situ.

you have a hole in your fuel pick up pipe in yer tank.;)
 
Does it just stop, or run lumpy then stop? If it just stops have you checked the wire connection on the fuel stop solonoid? Is there a loose connection?

it seems to do both sometimes it just dies and like this morning it chugged for acouple of secs then dies.ps could you tell me where the cut off is and can it be replaced.

It seems to me that it just doesn't like travelling at 55mph, try doing 53mph and see if you have the same problem.


Defo sounds like a fuel starvation problem, could well be dirt in the bottom of the tank, I'm sure it can be cleaned in situ, by removing the plate in the boot floor and taking the fuel sender unit out.
 
follow the fuel line from the fuel filter to the fuel injection pump (FIP). On the rear end of the FIP you will a single wire..check that it has a good connection
 
Sounds to me like ****e in the fuel. I'd undo fuel lines and blow them through with an airline, remove and clean/replace filters/sedimentor etc I'd also open the rear hatch, remove the fuel sender and try to see how much crap is in the fuel tank and try to remove it.

Does it run on diesel only? 'cos if you've recently tried to run it on veg oil or used additives, these can also clean the fuel tank sides and cause ****e in the fuel problems, see above!

just thought ide reply to say thanks for your advice.Ive done all things suggested even replaced the wire from oil pump to fuel injector pump (solanoid). the only thing i havnt done is clean tank.Which leads to my next question,on removing sedimentor(i unbolted the 11 mil bolt on top) so i could take the whole thing off in one piece,i then poured the diesal in a glass and was surprised to see about half inch of water in there. Ionly cleaned it about 3 months ago.Does this seem normal.Do you think could this be the problem.Is there a way to drain this water.

p.s as usual after all this it started and runs perfect so ime stiil not sure iff its fixed no dought it will behave untill the worst moment . keep you posted .Thanks again.
