Hi All

I am attempting replacing the dreaded Heater matrix O ring's and have a question, when the screw is undone on the clamp do the aluminium pipes simply pull out of the manifold toward the front of the car?

If this is the case then i think i have done most of the hard work actually getting to the screw itself.

Also do i need to drain the complete cooling system when doing this job?

Any help would be much appreciated :):)

Thanks...

hi all

i am attempting replacing the dreaded heater matrix o ring's and have a question, when the screw is undone on the clamp do the aluminium pipes simply pull out of the manifold toward the front of the car?

Yes, but be careful of the sensor clipped to one of the pipes, the clip is very flimsy and snaps easily.

If this is the case then i think i have done most of the hard work actually getting to the screw itself.
You certainly have..good policy to replace the screw with a m5 cap head socket screw (allen screw)..easier to tighten/remove using a ball ended allen key.

Also do i need to drain the complete cooling system when doing this job?

No..just a container in the footwell to catch whatever is in the matrix and pipes. If however, the coolant has been in for a couple of years, it's good practice to drain the system and refill with 50/50 mix of soft water and quality antifreeze.

Any help would be much appreciated :):)

thanks...

I have never done the o rings on mine yet but i hear the hardest part is getting the screw undone then i think the pipes just pull out, Make sure you mark the pipes top and bottom as its possible to get them wrong.

I am sure you will get someone who has done the job will give you better instructions than me

the way i did mine was to disconnect the heater hoses in the engine bay that will only drain the area your working on,get a black bin liner open it up and cover all the drivers footwell with it,undo the screw and push the ally pipes back, any coolant that comes out the ally pipe will run down the bin liner and out of the drivers door, clean the ally pipes where the o rings go with some cloth fit the new o rings then refit top up the coolant bleed it job done

The latest on this is i cannot get the screw undone as it is REALLY tight,

I'm concerned i'm going to round off the head if i go mad with it.

dont suppose anyone has any tips to get it undone??

Thanks :confused::confused::confused::confused:

I ended up taking out the entire dash ( not as hard as i thought ) and drilling out the head of the screw to get it off.

I then had to pull the 2 aluminium pipes throught to get the clamp in a vice to get the remainder of the screw out. I then replaced it with a M8 hex head bolt.

The 'drilling 2 holes in the inner side panel' was still really handy as when i started the car it was still dripping, these holes let me tighten the bolt slightly until it stopped without taking the dash off again.

It was a real pain but i'm glad i did it as next time (?) it will be easy.

now then, this is what i did on my disco 300tdi the o ring groves were shot so i joined the heater to pipes with a piece of heater hose on each and 4 hose clips, sounds a bit of a botch job, but was still going strong 3 years on when i got rid.
