Manual steering box problem.....

On behalf of a buddy here...... I thought I'd scoot over from the Disco forums to see if any inmates can assist

My buddy has a Ninety,1986 with a manual steering. We got it through the French MOT equal here with no bother a few months back....

The steering I thought was always a bit stiff from the outset...more so when turning left...since then the steering has been getting stiffer and stiffer to turn as the weeks go on....really hard ie.

I had an ex military 90 myself with manual steering so was able to feel that his was slightly stiffer from the onset.

There's oil in the box and I need to know what other things to check as all appears OK. Would the problem perhaps relate to shims in the swivel bearings?.....knuckles in the steering column??......can't think of much else...


I posted same question on other Usual Suspect forums too,to see if we can solve his problem...

Any inmates shed any light as to typical manual box problems please???

tint the steering damper seizin up? I,ve had that happen

mmm...nope.....a new damper was fitted for the MOT here...although having said that I can certainly check it to rule it out.....but it was always kind of stiff but never so that it was really hard to turn...

I was wondering if there were any typical problems before we went to the expense of a new box...
