Hi Folks,

I asked this question about 12 mths ago but due to back trouble (poor old man) I have not been able to investigate and just wondered if anyone has experienced the same problem since then (not the back).
When trying to select Low Box I keep getting 'Select neutral' when I already have. The transfer box goes in to neutral when inserting the fuse in to the BeCM. An ideas anybody.

A few months ago, my P38 got 'stuck in low range, nothing would sort it, so I hooked up a spare battery to some jump leads, pulled the plug that enters the ratio-motor in the transfer box & it would power from low to hi & vice-versa, turned out to be a 'blown' power transistor in the gearbox ECU, sent it off to various 'ECU repairers' but no-one could get the bits, so I ended up buying a new replacement, it was slightly different, apparently upgraded. Perfect now, took 2 mins to fit, cost around £140.00 I seem to remember.

Sounds like it could be the sensor that detects neutral is knackered - or the ECU!

Second thought - are you also holding down the clutch throughout when you are doing the transfer?

Hi Matt,

I've tried it with the clutch down and with it up and always get the same message. I've tried moving slowly just in case somethings stuck. Every Land Rover that I have bought to date I have always tried low box ....... except this one, bought it from someone I know. When I mentioned it some time later he said he had never used it, which I can quite believe .... he only did about 4000 miles a year in it. Not that I'm complaining about that because for it's age it is in excellent condition, 11 years old, 103k, still on it's original air springs ....... just low box not working!

Quite common for the Low selection to not work on P38/disco etc because most people never use it. Don't know if it would be worth hooking up to Testbook, but then the display unit it telling you why it is not happening. Attached a couple of pages from Rave regarding Low selection and info about the neutral position switch in the manual box.

there is a plastic collar inside the gear lever remote on top of the gearbox, the pin has broken off and the collar has slid down the shaft, this collar pushes the neutral switch.

its a fairly big job to change it but the part is only about £2
