Hi Guys
Just a quickie
Anybody got a manual P38
Want to change the gearbox oil, but according to Rave
it takes
Texaco MTF 94 2.2 or 2.7 litres

And i cant seem to find any or its equivelent from any motor factors

Is it a main dealer only job

or can anyone suggest anything else that they use

Cheers
Ian

Hi, I changed the oils in my diffs with Evo2 and oil in my manual gearbox with Evo1.

I had notchy gear changes, esp when cold, with the new oil in, its perfect.

Even with the freezing temps of late, its been no problem at all.

Really good stuff.

ATF dextron II or above mtf was the uprated version no differance really apart from the price tag just change your oil regularly :):)

I was advised by the local independent LR garage to use ATF rather than MTF in the manual gearbox. They reckoned the gearbox bearings lasted longer with ATF.
I use one of those pump attachments you can power off an electric hand drill to pump the oil into the gearbox. Just have to be careful to take it steady!

ATF is, as identified in its anacronym, Automatic Transmission Fluid....

Although it has been specified for more modern Manual Boxes, this is quite rare, and the P38 is to old for such IMHO....maybe your LR Indy cant get hold of the proper stuff!!....

MTF, again identified in its anacronym, is Manual Transmission Fluid.

Texaco MTF 94 can be had from LR Dealer no doubt as it was formulated for the Rover Manual Transmissions.....

Aslong as it is a 75W-80W or 80W oil meeting the requirements of API GL-4 you can't go to far wrong!

I do remember James Martin advising ATF was as good with regular changes and mtf against aft was no different mtf being synthetic but not making parts last any longer . I'm sure mtf is more expensive I've always used ATF in my r380 gearboxes

Wasn't James but he didn't dispute it

Re: P38 manual gearbox and transfer box fluids
landrover changed the spec of oil from dexron to a fully synthetic mtf94 for the r380 manual box, makes for a nice smooth change. ive saved you putting on wait by telling you
that a,.

they originally had atf dexron 2 as specified oil ,mtf can help with gear change on some boxes but not all ,ive reconditioned nearly a thousand and stripping repairing you get to see what effect different oil has and those on mtf still have the dog teeth wear on baulk rings as those on atf ,not changing oil regulary seems to shorten life more so than other reasons ,you can certainly tell those that have as obviously still broken but otherparts have long life still in them but those run on same oil too long have wear on all parts

ATF was used in manual boxes then superseded by thicker MTF on later models. Possibly when Honda were associated with Rover as i believe MTF was at one time a Honda specific oil. So ATF should be fine, however the consequence of mixing the two i don't know.

ive said it doesnt matter which you use atf or mtf , regular oil change is important , ive known some say mtf has improved gear change in some boxes and others say no difference , but from experience of rebuilding r380s you dont see better lubrication in mtf run boxes rather than atf ,though probably mtf lasts longer ,but by that time box is been buggered by the contamintion of oil flowing through gears and bearings , you can see the metal impregnated in the surfaces just as prevalent with mtf as atf ,clean atf will lube box better than dirty mtf ,the strainer/filter in box only protects pump not bearings etc

where is the drain plug on the r380 gear box got the mtf 94 oil from local motor factors £5 a litre

Feel sure it will be somewhere in the bottom of the box. It won't be at the top that's for sure. Make sure the oil is hot when you drain it. ;)
