Main lights problem

hi, my defender 90 300tdi has developed a fault on the lights. When I switch it to the side lights the main head lights come on, but not as bright as normal. When I pit the main lights on all the lights go off, included the dashboard lights. Any ideas on the cause?

A long time ago when my switch the horn sounded when dipping!!

Start by checking your earths, as it sounds as though the sides are earthing through the heads.

On my 2a diesel the horn would sound when near full right lock,a bit embarrassing

when following plod around a roundabout.
I would just look around pretending it was not me.
