MAF operation

When the weather is cool and possibly when it is warm, my Freelander Td4 auto is very sluggish for the first mile or so.

I was wondering if the MAF has any bearing on this.

I know about if it is generally slow to pick up and disconnecting the MAF and driving it improves it I would need a new MAZf, but once the engine has s little heat In it it seems fine but was wondering if it has any bearing on the temperature.

It is probable that the car is slugging invite warmer weather but it isn't as pronounced as in the cold weather.

I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this and exploring avenues.

I've not looked to see how easy it is to disconnect the MAF without taking off the engine cover. .

Mine is the same. It's an auto and I've always put it down to cold engine + cold gearbox. Never really given it anymore thought than that though as within a few short mins or a mile or so it's normal as Norman.

EGR bypass done. I havent on mine and have always noticed same and have put it down to EGR still being as original which will contribute to being down on power a bit until engine is warm and breathing fresh air.

I've got the bosch maf fitted along with a synergy box and find it very good ,me em from when first started

have u taken the maf out and given it a good clean

must admit when I first start it up i poodle down the road to give the oil chance etc to get round the engine and warm up

I used the Bosh MAF as well, and ended up cleaning the throttle body. The acceleration response was great.

I'm not talking about racing down the road when the engine is cold, I'm just talking about trying to drive down the road. I've had other turbo diesel engines and this is the worst by a huge margin until there is some warmth in the engine.

You put the throttle down, and well, not a lot happens.

I'll look into cleaning the MAF. It may be the original one at 8 1/2 years old and almost 134,000 miles.

Its not the maf the auto box is just letting itself warm up mine is the same warm or cold weather for the first few mins.

Thanks, I thought it felt engine rather than gearbox related, but you could be right.

My gearbox oil has been changed twice in the last 10,000 miles.

Mine does the same - and its a manual box

Takes 30 seconds or a minute for it to "wake-up" from stone cold

I know what u meant about going down the road and being sluggish, sorry if it came cross wrong

mines an auto as well , maybe having the synergy helps it along better from the start

mines a per facelift so maybe the facelift model is designed like that to protect the engine whilst cold ????

Mine has a remap, so it will go if the throttle is pushed down hard when cold, but I don't like doing that! It needs much less throttle when slightly warmed up.

Far as I know that's what it's supposed to do. The MAF doesn't do anything until the engine/gearbox has reached the correct operating temperature. Petrol engined vehicles work the same way, heating up the cat first, all to do with emissions.

But why is the Td4 diesel turbo worse than others?
