Talking to a TD5 owner recently who’d just had his Landy MOTd.
It passed, but garage told him, IF he’d taken it in after the new test came in it would have failed.
He thought this was because smoke could be seen coming out the exhaust.
Is this correct what he’s saying, because if it is, my TD5 has no chance to pass it’s july test.
And, if they fail it for smoking, what can be done to stop this? If anything.
Regards, Ken.

I thought it was only vehicles with DPF which were not allowed to have visible smoke

There’s a lot on the WWW to help your understanding on the new MOT regs, such as with vehicles equipped with DPFs its emissions and zero smoke at idle which also goes for those non equipped.

Most of them smoked from new they can hardly expect people to modify their vehicles so they’re better than from new. I’ve only read about DPF-equipped vehicles needing to be visible smoke-free. The WWW is full of as much rubbish as it is useful information. It will probably say in the updated MOT guidance

Bit of a dummy here, but, would my 2005 TD5 have had a DPF fitted when new?
On the original front exhaust pipe (Which I still have) there is a bulge part way down where the pipe is a larger diameter for 6 or 8 inches in length. What would that be?
Regards,Ken.

You don’t know what a DPF is, how it works or even what it look like then. Since 2009, and the introduction of the Euro 5 emissions standard, DPFs have been fitted to all new cars with Diesel engines... so does that help, but then maybe not.

It'll be a CAT

discool,
You’ve put that so eloquently even a caveman could understand it, possibly, even I.

not only a poor exhaust systems can create smoke ..injector issues EGR issues engine breathing to many things to list.... the coulor of the smoke out the chimney is a good place to start

Those measurements look a bit small for a cat. A cat looks a lot like a small silencer. You might be looking at a flexible coupling? A defender dpf is an extension to the cat and located between the engine and the cat, and has a sensor & cable fitted at the top which I guess is wired into the engine management system. The whole thing is a big lump wedged between the engine and gear box and fitted close up to the drivers footwell and extends all the way up side of the engine.

You want to try going to bed a bit earlier you might not be so grumpy :p

I have checked the MOT regulations, and vehicles fitted with DPF cannot emit any visible smoke. For vehicles without DPF the smoke test with a diesel smoke meter is carried out.

Looks like I have a CAT. then, if I need it.
Thank you, Sir.

He may well be looking at the flexible coupling!
My 1996 Defender has a CAT though, which is not a lot more than a large bulge in the pipe. It has not sensors or cables fitted to it, so god know how it works or how long it lasts cos it can't decide when to regenerate itself.
This is what it looks like 300Tdi with CAT @kenbro both the flexible coupling and CAT are in this picture

This is what a cat with dpf looks like on the Pumas. Should be easy to spot if you have one of these fitted.
