hi all, td5,
any one come up with a more efficient way to lubricate the rear door hinges, i have tried wd 40, 3in1, and the dealer used some spray on grease, but nothing seems to penetrate, the buggers should have been fitted with grease nipples or something
regards
voith

oh and by the way, they are only tight not seized, as the back door is rarely opened,

have you tried wd40 and work the door back and forth , and i mean work THAT door, for about 10 mins or so then once its freed squoosh some silcone lub or 3 in 1 on them.
you should be able to fit grease nipple easily enough if you can't be arsed to open yer door every now and then

hi slob,
thanks for the clear and precise reply, exactly as expected from yourself, as I said in my post, i have tried wd40, 3/1 and spray on grease, and nothing seems to penetrate, the hinges are unworn, so there is no opening for me to squirt into, all I am doing is spraying the outside.

yes i could fit grease nipples, however am loath to try this as a mistake on my part would\could make matters worse, and subtract from the good quality paint job it has at the moment.

if there is no better penetrant than wd40, then i will have to persevere.

if this problem were to appear in my field of work i would be thinking of stripping the hinge pins to emery clean and grease before re-installing, but on cursory look it would suggest that this is not an easy job.

but thanks again for replying

did you do as i said with ref to workin yer door?

its the only way to get the oil where its needed. keep shoooshing the oil and moving the doors and it will get there.

a bit of patience and perseverance is needed

hi slob,
yes m8, i have done it with wd 40 and 3/1, swung it to my arms gave up, several times, as i said, it only gets around the outside, it barely penetrates the join let alone the pin itself, there is no wear to allow my to lift the door to get a gap.
oh well, i will just have to carry on with preventive measures,

Best stuff I've found for door hinges is spray on Lithium grease - some of them come with a little tube like WD40 so you can get it right into the hinge, work the hinge back and forth and spray a good dose in. Works a treat - I've even used it on the window shutters on the house, they are almost too smooth now and you have to be careful they don't take you arm off when closing!

yeap, took me a while to remember where i saw that but better late than never ...
you can add a personal touch by fitting plastic caps on the nipples (like the ones that go on the brake caliper bleeders or alike).
good luck

Could be better to consider getting a small, telescopic hand grease gun (about 4 quid) and a steel conical nozzle for the end (about same price). You then don't need a grease nipple nor the large hole - a 2mm hole would be sufficient. They are quite effective.
