Hi folks,

I am re-assembling the front axle of a 1983 series 3.
Reading the workshop manual it says I need the listed lubricants/sealants.
Some I can get ok but am unsure on a couple of others.
Being as the manual is not new, there are possibly more modern ones.
Any suggestions please?
thanks for any help
Peter

As above

Bostik was used for dust covers but any instant gasket will do the job. You may want to get back in there at some point.

swivel housing grease

One shot grease was not introduced until the later models of defender and the swivels of the older vehicles should be filled with EP90 rather than grease. I may be wrong but it was my belief that this was because the thicker grease does not give the splash lubrication of the top pin railko bush that is needed. The later models had a taper roller bearing for the top pin and therefore the grease was fine.

Ah yes the never ending debate on swivel lubrication.
Some say oil and some say grease.
Some say grease won't splash
Some say UJs fail early with oil.

I think that is why one shot was eventually recommended. It's a thin grease or alternatively a thick oil.

Best of both worlds ;)

When warm, one shot grease is surprisingly runny. Not that the old debate will ever go away :)

Being sat on the fence I put a sachet of one shot in each swivel and topped up to filler plug level with ep90

Hello again,
I have been reading other threads regarding the use of one shot grease and gear oils, the difference of opinions, and found it very informative.
Which brings me to another question.
In the swivel housing would you pack the half shaft bearing with grease, or leave it for the one shot or gear oil
to take care of?
cheers Peter and James
Edit ...Also the bottom swivel bearing.

I have both a series running EP90 and a defender running oneshot, but I always pack all of the bearings before assembly regardless of which vehicle they are being fitted to. I also lubricate the top swivel bush before assembly as well.
