Suggestions please. I am having problems selecting high box on lt77 .It is very stiff and wont engage firmly and keeps "spitting out of gear". I have a suspicion a mate my have used it in diff lock for a long road period.(even after warning not to) I have to use an extention bar over the short shift lever to select firmly. This is not a good solution. I have checked that its not fouling on gaitters / bodywork.

Have you tried shifting while rolling the car forward at about 5 mph ? Start off in low 2nd, dip clutch and put main box in neutral, knock transfer box into neutral, release and reapply clutch pedal, put into high box.

Worked for mine a couple of times when it wouldn't go in - strangely it's a lot better since hot shifting it those couple of times.

Cheers,

The transfer case will be the LT230T probably (LT77 is the main box).

If its spitting out of gear its most likely worn or damaged linkages or selector fork...

Try this. Put main box in neutral, put transfer box into neutral, put main box into 1st and push transfer box lever as far as it will go. Keep pressure on the tranfer box lever while gently letting the clutch out a bit. You should feel it drop nicely into gear and it should stay there. If that don't work there's a problem.

Thanks for the info guys I have tryed this trick but to no success. I think it may be time to get the spanners out. Unless I shorten the linkage rod. because it feels like that the High ratio selector is not fully locating. As if it is fowling on something.

STOP!!

Don't take it to bits yet!
The gearbox will be LT77, so the transfer box should be LT230 - I think.

Open the middle under-seat panel to get light and access.

On the right side top of the gearbox you will JUST be able to see the linkages that operate the Hi-Lo ranges, and that lock the centre diff.

Before you do anything else, make SURE that all the bits of these linkages are completely free to move, and that they DO move. NO force should be needed.

DO NOT USE FORCE! You will certainly bend things in ways they shouldn't be bent and it may never work again.

The linkage you are looking for is the one that pulls and pushes a short rod that points back and down, and attaches to a small flat lever at each end.

If need be detach the lever at one end, and see if that allows you to properly enagage High range by poking the lower lever towards the front. The rod is slightly adjustable at the bottom end, and I suggest that if you decide to sort it, you take the rod off, clean and copper-grease the adjusting threads, and put it back WHILE THE BOX IS IN Hi-Range. That way you can be sure to have the Hi-Lo lever getting it far enough into Hi to make it stay there. You can test drive it with the rod off to make sure it stays in Hi-Range.

Email me if you want a copy of the workshop manual diagram, which won't paste into this reply.

hi everyone,

i am having the same problem i have a Lt77 gearbox and when driving it keeps jumoing out of high gear, i have tried looking at the linkages ect and all looks fine.

i am wondering if a disco transfer box would fit onto it if so which one?
is it better to get a new one or get refurbished?

Please can someone help, quite scary driving down the road and having no gears then having to stop to engage it again.
