I have had a couple of different ways of reading these serial numbers offered. One being its the first 2 numbers then the last one the other that its the last 3. I had gone with the later of the 2 but want to check before going out today and buying a 1.4 transfer box from a disco believing mine to be a 1.6. Also mine has been over stamped does that mean anything? Mine reads: 50ARB59821D

thats a gear box serial number, theres only one way to read it first 3 digits define what the box is last digit siffix ie version of that box they tend to keep improved over time so a g version is better than a d
50a is a non tdi 4 cylinder lt77 for a defender, but will fit a tdi, a 50a has an input of 21 teeth driving a layshaft gear with 34, a 56a tdi spec has a 22 input driving a 33
the one in the pic has a reconditioners number on it a 50a gear box could have a 1.4 or 1.6 transfer box as standard
a 1.6 transfer box is a 20d and a 1.4 22d of that age

Thanks i'm an idiot i am getting myself confused this end no wonder it didn't make much sense, mine is a 1.667 with the code 21D There is a disco one for sale locally that i thought i would pick up as it seems a good mod to go with a 300tdi engine, i am planning on keeping the lt77 just because the r380 that is also for sale is damaged at the bell housing and as the mating of the bell housing to the 300tdi was my main worry i couldn't see the point of worrying about getting that welded up! Its also getting expensive.
the number on the disco transfer box reads apparently
hrc2202 bsk15

I'm Still clueless! although i suspect the h should be an f ,still its only an hour away!

Just read that properly, so there is no 21d?

hrc numbers are casting numbers and of no use to us, a 1.2 would be a 28d or a later on 32d

well that is a surprise you just saved me 2 hours and 90 quid thank you Mr Martin you are a gentleman and a scholar.
I am guessing this truck has had a tdi in it before (it came engineless) but with the inter cooler and lowered radiator mounts, hoping it was a 300tdi as then the engine mounts might be already done!

yes thats a 28d = 1.2
its on a b sufix so quite early and no cross drilled input option, you need c suffix on preferably
I really must read the entire reply! So do i keep it or find a more modern version with a later suffix? , also will a 1.2 be geared to high? was planning on pretty standard 16" wheels and tyres.
I appreciate you time by the way.

1.2 on a defender is good for long distance cruising ,less good for hills as and with very tall tyres, id definitely look for a later suffix
