hi just bought my first landrover , its a discovery 2 1999 v8 with lpg fitted with 4 tanks only had it 4 days and the tanks wont fill up , it only took 11 lts of gas then cuts out, gauge is showing empty ,the car is running fine on gas and petrol just wont full up properly does anyone have any clue whats up with it or can recommend anyone who fixes them in the nwest area thanks george

When you refer to the gauge do you mean the LED indicator on the switch or a gauge on the tanks themselves?

If you mean the LED they are notoriously unreliable. Mine currently works the wrong way round, it shows full when it's empty. The only true way to find out how much you get into the tank is to fill it until the pump cuts out, zero your trip meter and run the car until it is out of gas then check your mileage. Your mpg should be a little bit lower than that on petrol.

Most people on LPG use the trip meter as a fuel gauge.

Also tanks are designed to only fill to approx 80% because of pressure.

You might find this SITE helpful for LPG specific problems.

Check another thread here, you may have a solenoid valve coil gone down.

Easy to fix however.

Why 4 tanks? Sounds a bit complex?

We've got 2 X 33 litre and the original petrol tank.

thanks for your help . yes its got 4 tanks 2 large tanks underneath and 2 torpedo tubes side of car tanks look older than the lpg tubes etc looks all new in the engine bay got told its all new its a valtek lpg system,, and yes it was running low on lpg as a beeping sound came on sounds as if that valve has stuck is it easy to fix george...

Depending on the age of your tanks and the multivalves fitted to them, the gas solenoid coil is fitted on top of the valve and has a small plastic snap-on cap, underneath which is an M4 nut.

Undo the nut and the coil comes away on the wiring, leaving the valve behind.

The valve coil is rated for 12V but as most cars run at nearly 14 or so, the coils fail after a few years.

Just get a new coil and connect to the existing wiring and refit.

Grease the valve spigot that the coil sits on to make it easier to remove next time.

Most Car LPG fitting places sell the coils, or I'll give you a contact if you can't fin anyone.

Brief write-up here:

V8 Gas (LPG) Solenoid Change

Picture of a new multivalve head below, the black unit with red and black leads is the coil you are looking to change. The machined circular area with two threaded holes is where the gauge would fit, it is driven by a magnet on an arm underneath the brass.
