lower gear not engaging

Hi, can any one advise, got a land rover with a Puma 2.4 engine, periodically it won't go into second or reverse, if i turn the engine off then put it in gear again its fine. it doesn't do it all the time.
Have been told its not the clutch, can any one help?.

You want to be thinking about getting that Getrag MT82 pulled out and either replaced or rebuilt, not exactly new boxes anymore and if you search your exact problem on the Tranny forums (not the cross dressing ones either ) you'll find it is quite a common fault cured by replacement or rebuild.

Thanks for that, is it a big job, does it entail removal of the gearbox?

By that reply I am going to make a few suggestions, ring Ashcroft transmissions, buy a reconditioned box from them and then get their approved fitting garage to fit it for you, that way you just rock up, kick back for a few hours and then drive away happy.
